Top Tip

For horses with more significant spring allergy symptoms, i.e. requiring more targeted cough/allergy support, consider our comprehensive PollenCOMBO . This 3-in-1 formula combines PollenTonic , KoffTonic (cough reflex and airway comfort), and Spirulina (known to support allergic reactions, and balance histamine levels).

Together, these supplements provide a complete equine seasonal allergy supplement.

Overview

Allergic reactions in horses are now common throughout the year, with spring (tree) pollens often causing significant histamine intolerance. This is usually followed by our hot and humid summers, presenting a deeper respiratory congestion from the grass pollens.

PollenTonic addresses the spring tree-pollen symptoms by calming the immune system's over-reaction to allergens.

The root cause? It's all down to an over-reaction by the body's immune system, although recent science has now identified it as a much bigger picture. See our blog post: Why does my horse react to the spring pollens?

For further equine pollen allergy insights, see our main A-Z Respiration page in the Advice Centre above.

Is PollenTonic Right for My Horse?

PollenTonic is ideal for horses who struggle with the lighter to moderate end of spring allergy symptoms - especially those whose reactions are mainly histamine-driven rather than deeply respiratory.

If your horse shows any of the patterns below, PollenTonic is very likely the right fit.

🌿 Ideal for horses who…

  • React mainly to early spring tree pollens(rather than the deeper respiratory effects of summer grass pollens).
  • Show histamine-style allergies- itchy eyes, lacrimation, or sensitivity around the eyelids.
  • Rub their nose, face, or eyes when pollen counts rise.
  • Headshake lightly or intermittently in windy or high-pollen conditions.
  • Have mild, upper-airway irritation but no deeper congestion, wheezing, or ongoing cough.

If your horse’s spring allergies are noticeable but not deeply respiratory- more itchy, reactive, or irritated than congested - PollenTonic offers gentle, targeted support to help them stay more comfortable.

If your horse struggles with deeper airway congestion, throat irritation, or grass-pollen respiratory distress, they may need PollenCOMBO instead.

⚠️ Not suitable for horses who…

  • Are pregnant or nursing, due to aromatic and cleansing botanicals.
  • Are on steroid or immune-modulating medications ( Liquorice Root may prolong steroid action) unless under veterinary guidance.
  • Have kidney disease or fluid retention ( Liquorice caution).
  • Are severe headshakers whose symptoms do not correlate with pollen levels (possible trigeminal involvement).

Which blend - PollenTonic or PollenCOMBO?

Each supports a different aspect of seasonal allergy management:

PollenTonic - f ront-line support for spring pollen irritation.

Best for:

  • itchy or reactive eyes
  • mild headshaking
  • nose rubbing
  • early spring histamine responses

Choose PollenTonic when symptoms are light to moderate and mainly immune-driven.

PollenCOMBO - t he deeper, broader 3-in-1 solution for:

  • dual immune + airway reactions
  • coughing
  • respiratory irritation
  • stronger or recurring spring-to-summer flare-ups

Choose PollenCOMBO when symptoms involve both histamine irritation and breathing discomfort.

If your horse worsen into early summer when the humidity hits, and the respiratory system seems more congested, i.e. wheezing, flared nostrils, hives, .

If symptoms worsen in early summer

If your horse deteriorates as humidity rises, with clearer signs of airway congestion, wheezing, flared nostrils, or heave lines, see our BreathePlus - our top-of-the-range specialised respiratory comfort support.

Composition & Feed Guide

Each herb in PollenTonic plays a specific role in supporting seasonal spring pollen comfort, helping soothe the upper respiratory tract, modulate the immune response, and bring gentle balance during periods of heightened spring pollen exposure.

PollenTonic is a nutritional food supplement and not veterinary medicine. For more on this, see Dr Kellon's article - Nutrition is not 'Alternative' Therapy .

Clinical Considerations

PollenTonic is a gentle, supportive blend designed to help maintain seasonal spring-pollen comfort, balanced immune responses, and clearer breathing.

Advisories

  • For best results, begin feeding 4–6 weeks before the spring-pollen season, so the immune system can strengthen before allergens peak.
  • Contains botanicals that naturally influence fluid balance, histamine responses, and respiratory comfort - ensure constant access to water and forage.
  • Horses with deeper spring-pollen airway congestion and recurring cough, may require PollenCOMBO or BreathePlus instead. Please check with us for advice.
  • May be used long-term through spring as part of a broad seasonal support routine.

Cautions

  • Glycyrrhiza (Liquorice) may prolong corticosteroid action; veterinary oversight recommended for horses on steroid therapy.
  • Herbs influencing circulation (e.g. Ginkgo , Achillea ) should be used with care alongside anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications.
  • No clinically significant interactions are reported at nutritional levels, but always space herbal and medicated feeds by a few hours where possible.

Contraindications

  • Not suitable for pregnant or nursing mares due to aromatic and immune-modulating botanicals.
  • Avoid use in horses on steroid medications(dexamethasone, prednisolone, inhalers) unless under veterinary guidance - Glycyrrhiza (Liquorice) may prolong steroid activity.
  • Use caution in horses with kidney disease or fluid retention, as Glycyrrhiza (Liquorice) may influence electrolyte balance and water regulation.
  • Not advised for severe or atypical headshaking cases where symptoms occur outside pollen-related triggers (possible trigeminal involvement).
