Does your horse get puffy legs when they're standing around?

Perhaps their legs fill overnight, after travelling, during box rest, or simply when turnout and movement are reduced – then start going down again once they're walking about.

That's where we'd look at LymphTone.

“I didn't believe it would work, but it does – it really makes her legs go down.” – Ellie & Lily

Our simple three-herb blend of Cleavers, Calendula and Chickweed is designed to support normal lymphatic flow, fluid balance and tissue comfort when movement – the lymphatic system's natural pump – has slowed down.

And there's a useful rule of thumb:

  • If movement improves the puffiness, think LymphTone.
  • If it doesn't – or swelling is persistent, recurring or accompanied by tissue or skin changes – that's a different picture, and where we'd look at LymphCARE or veterinary assessment.

*For the latest insights on lymphatic health, see our main A-Z Horse Library/Lymphatic System page in our Info Centre above.

Overview – why do legs fill when horses stand around?

The lymphatic system is different from the bloodstream - it doesn't have a heart continuously pumping fluid around the body. Instead, movement and muscle contraction help keep lymph moving through its vessels.

Which explains something many horse owners know very well. Ned comes in for the night with perfectly normal legs. By morning they're puffy. Turn him out, get him walking – and gradually they go back down again.

That's lymph telling us it needs movement

When a horse stands for longer periods, particularly in a stable, during travel or while movement is restricted, fluid can accumulate in the lower limbs.

Once they start moving again, the natural pumping action of the muscles helps lymphatic drainage pick up again.

That's the everyday picture LymphTone is designed for. Its three herbs – Cleavers, Calendula and Chickweed – have a long history of traditional use around lymphatic flow, fluid balance and tissue comfort.

But the important clue is still the horse.

  • Soft puffiness that improves with movement? That's LymphTone territory.
  • Swelling that's hot, painful, sudden, persistent or doesn't improve with movement needs investigating rather than assuming it's simply sluggish lymph. And where there are recurring lymphatic flare-ups or established tissue changes, LymphCARE is our deeper support option.

How LymphTone fits into your horse's support plan

LymphTone is a good fit when your horse gets soft, puffy legs that appear when they're standing around – and improve once they start moving again.

Choose LymphTone if your horse:

✔ Fills overnight in the stable, then the puffiness goes down with turnout

✔ Gets puffy legs after travelling or other periods of standing still

✔ Is on box rest or temporarily having much less movement than usual

✔ Stocks up when winter turnout or exercise becomes more limited

In short: if standing makes the legs puffier and movement makes them better, that's classic LymphTone territory.

Foundation support

Lymphatic health is wonderfully unglamorous – movement, hydration and good everyday nutrition do a lot of the heavy lifting.

Supporting your horse's baseline nutrition with a forage-based mineral blend such as EquiVita or VitaComplete helps provide the nutritional foundations those tissues and systems rely upon every day.

*If you're not already feeding a mineral balancer, try one of our 1kg trial bags to start with.

In summary

Use LymphTone for the horse whose legs fill when they stop moving and improve when they start again.

Keep them moving as much as their circumstances safely allow, and let that simple movement test guide you.

Energetics - how LymphTone works

If you want the science, 'energetic architecture' explains how a blend is designed to work across the body's interconnected systems – not just which herbs are included, but how they interact to create a specific effect.

LymphTone is beautifully simple because the job itself is beautifully simple: help support normal lymphatic flow when reduced movement takes away some of its natural assistance.

How the formula works

  1. Keeping fluid moving - Cleavers is the main lymphatic herb in the blend, traditionally used to support normal lymphatic drainage and fluid movement through the tissues.
  2. Supporting the tissues around it - Calendula complements that movement with its traditional affinity for lymphatic and tissue health, while Chickweed brings gentle soothing support where tissues feel puffy or uncomfortable.

Together, they make a deliberately uncomplicated little trio: move, balance, soothe.

Big picture

LymphTone is there for the everyday picture where standing around means fluid starts to linger, and getting moving again helps it shift.

Three herbs, one straightforward job - flow.

Clinical considerations / veterinary reference

Advisories

  • Ensure consistent hydration and daily movement (even gentle hand-walking) to encourage natural lymphatic drainage.
  • Recommended as a 4–6 week course, with review thereafter. Safe to feed long-term.

Contraindications

  • Always check with your vet before feeding to pregnant/nursing mares.
  • Check with your vet before use where medication affects fluid balance, or where heart, kidney or circulatory disease is known or suspected.

LymphTone FAQs

How do I know if my horse's puffy legs are a LymphTone problem?

If your horse's legs fill overnight, after travelling, during box rest or when turnout is reduced – then start going down again once they're walking about – that's classic LymphTone territory.

Movement and muscle contraction help pump lymph through the body, so when movement slows, fluid can linger in the lower limbs.

Standing makes them puffier; movement makes them better.

That's the horse we're thinking of.

What's the difference between LymphTone and LymphCARE?

Think the horse who fills overnight but improves once they're turned out or walking again versus a more persistent or recurring picture, particularly where there are established tissue or skin changes or previous lymphatic flare-ups.

The legs usually give us the clue.

Can I use LymphTone while my horse is on box rest?

Yes. Box rest takes away one of the lymphatic system's greatest helpers – movement – so stocking-up can become much more noticeable.

LymphTone can support normal lymphatic flow and fluid balance during that period, alongside whatever movement your vet or rehabilitation plan allows. Even gentle hand-walking can be useful where it's permitted.

The herbs can support the system, but they can't take Ned for his walk!

How quickly should I expect puffy legs to improve?

That depends very much on why they're puffy.

With straightforward stocking-up, you may notice that the legs naturally reduce as your horse begins moving again. LymphTone is there to support that normal process rather than force fluid away.

We'd look at the overall pattern rather than putting a stopwatch on the herbs.

If the puffiness is becoming more persistent, repeatedly worsening or no longer improves as expected with movement, that's useful information – and a reason to investigate rather than simply feeding LymphTone for longer.

How long can I feed LymphTone?

We'd usually start with 4–6 weeks and then review.

If reduced movement is temporary and your horse returns to their normal routine, you should find they no longer need it.

For horses who regularly stock up because turnout or movement remains limited, LymphTone can also be used for longer-term support where appropriate.

As ever, follow the horse rather than assuming that once a supplement goes into the feed room it has acquired permanent residency.
