'Legacy of Legends' Charity Wish List
While it’s lovely to image that elite competittion horses we’ve come to know and love go riding off into the sunset with their riders after retirement, the reality is often far more sobering. Many of these incredible athletes are sold on repeatedly, with their past connections unaware of where they end up - or what becomes of them.
Legacy of Legends, a nonprofit charity based in the Limousin region of France, is changing that story.
Founded in 2016 by equestrian Nick Moon and his wife Jen, Legacy of Legends is a sanctuary for forgotten elite competition horses - many of whom were once Puissance stars, Olympians, and show ring favourites. Some arrive directly from the slaughter pipeline. All arrive in need of safety, care, and dignity.
The horse that started it all
Legacy of Legends began with Eperlan Du Fouquet , the iconic puissance partner of Olympian Ben Maher MBE. When the Moons found him, Eperlan wasn’t in a good way - he'd been sold on, renamed, lost his condition and spirit, and was all but forgotten. They gave him back his health, his name, and his legacy - and even reunited him with Ben.
“To know Eperlan is thriving and content in his retirement is wonderful news,” says Ben. “His future now reflects what he achieved in his working life, and that’s very special to me.”
How you can help
