Legacy of Legends
COMING SOON! 'Legacy of Legends' Charity Wish List
While it’s lovely to think the horse athletes we’ve come to know and love in elite competition go riding off into the sunset with their human athletes, the reality is that for many, this doesn't happen, especially if they’re sold on multiple times without former owners or riders knowing what's happened to them. Enter Legacy of Legends , a nonprofit equine charity in the Limousin region of France near Limoges.
This organisation was started by equestrian Nick Moon and his wife Jen in 2016, to create a retirement centre for the forgotten elite competition horses, many of whom end up in the slaughter pipeline.
The founding of Legacy of Legends Charity
Legacy of Legends began when the Moons took in Puissance jumping superstar Eperlan Du Fouquet, ridden by Ben Maher MBE. He had previously been sold on and wasn’t in a good way, which - as the Moons have discovered - happens all too often with elite horses once they stop competing,
Initially, the Moons cared for Eperlan in the UK, but having then outgrown their British stables, the Moons moved to France in 2016, and Legacy of Legends was born, with more space and formal charity status to take in elite horses in need.
They then reunited Eperlan with Olympian Ben Maher, who said of his former mount:
“I am very happy to support Legacy of Legends - to know Eperlan Du Fouquet, my former Puissance partner, is thriving and content in his retirement is wonderful news. Horses like Eperlan contribute so much to our sport over the years - to know his future is secure and reflects what he achieved in his working life is very special to me.”
