Psyllium is affectionately known as the “colon broom” - and for good reason. Its husks are rich in both soluble and insoluble fibre, making it one of nature’s most effective and versatile gut balancers.

A fibre with two faces

What makes psyllium special is that it works in both directions:

  • If things are moving too quickly, psyllium’s fibre absorbs excess water, firming up loose droppings and slowing intestinal transit.
  • If things are sluggish, psyllium adds bulk and moisture, making stools softer, larger, and easier to pass.

In other words, whether it’s diarrhoea or constipation, psyllium gently restores balance.

Soothing the gut

When mixed with water, psyllium forms a thick, gel-like mass. This gel coats and soothes the digestive tract, easing irritation and inflammation. It slows down the passage of food, helping improve nutrient absorption and leaving you with a greater sense of fullness after eating.

Metabolic and heart support

Psyllium’s benefits extend beyond the gut:

  • It can bind to cholesterol in the digestive tract, helping the body excrete it before it enters the bloodstream - supporting healthy cholesterol levels.
  • It helps regulate blood sugar and triglycerides, making it a valuable ally for metabolic balance.

Feeding the microbiome

As a prebiotic, psyllium also nourishes the beneficial bacteria in the gut. These microbes play a vital role in digestion, immunity, and overall health, so keeping them happy is key.

With its unique ability to clean, calm, and nourish all at once, psyllium is a simple yet powerful way to keep the digestive system flowing smoothly and the whole body in balance.
