Ashwagandha in History & Tradition
In the Ayurvedic tradition of India, ashwagandha is known as a rasayana - a revered life-prolonging tonic. And for good reason - this root has been used for centuries to help the body (and mind) find balance during times of stress, tension, or pressure. In other words, it’s one of nature’s most trusted “reset buttons.”
Its name literally translates to “that which has the smell of a horse - bringing the vitality and strength of a horse.” A bold claim, yes, but it speaks to the deep respect ashwagandha has earned as a restorer of energy, stamina, and resilience. (And while I can’t vouch for the “sexual energy of a horse” part personally… the tradition suggests that ashwagandha helps rekindle vitality by easing the stress that dampens drive, rather than acting like a quick-fire aphrodisiac.)
Like most adaptogens, ashwagandha works quietly and deeply, helping your body respond to whatever life throws at it. It doesn’t force - it balances.
What makes it so special?
Ashwagandha is also an immunomodulant , which means it helps the immune system stay steady and strong. Research shows it can:
- Prevent depletion of white blood cells
- Activate lymphocytes (key immune cells)
- Support the body during illness or recovery
Modern studies are catching up to what Ayurveda has known for centuries. Ashwagandha has been studied for supporting type 2 diabetes, improving resilience in cancer care (notably in breast cancer protocols in India), and even offering benefits for people with bipolar disorder.
Simply put, ashwagandha is a root for resilience - restoring energy, easing the stress response, and helping both humans and horses find their calm strength again.
