ELECTROLYTE-PLUS *Nutrient blend for horses - hydration, stamina, recovery
Electrolytes - often called body salts - are essential for your horse’s health, especially during intense activity or hot weather.
When horses sweat, they don’t just lose water - they lose key minerals like sodium, potassium, and chloride, all vital for muscle function, nerve signals, and fluid balance. If these losses aren’t replaced, it can affect energy metabolism, mental clarity, performance, and recovery.
Electrolyte-PLUS is a complete, equine-safe blend of key electrolyte salts to support your horse’s hydration, stamina, and comfort - whether it’s summer turnout, hard work, travel stress, or long hacks.

Overview
Why electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge and play a key role in your horse’s:
- Fluid exchange between cells
- Muscle contraction and relaxation
- Nerve transmission
- Body temperature regulation
They’re mostly absorbed in the small and large intestines. But during periods of sweat, diarrhoea, or heavy exertion, those reserves can drop fast - and unlike some nutrients, electrolytes can’t be stored in the body for future use. That’s why daily replenishment is key.
Signs your horse may be dehydrated
Wondering how to check hydration? Try the gum test:- Place your thumb against your horse’s upper gum for 1 second. The pressure spot will turn white, but should return to pink within 1–2 seconds. If it takes longer, your horse may be dehydrated.
- Dry or tacky gums
- Reduced skin elasticity
- Dark or infrequent urination
- Lethargy, muscle tremors, or poor recovery post-exercise

Clinical Considerations
ElectrolytePLUS is a balanced, gentle formulation designed for regular use during warm weather, work, or travel.
When used according to guidance, it is considered safe for long-term, seasonal, or workload-dependent supplementation.
Advisories
- Always ensure free access to fresh, clean water when feeding electrolytes as horses cannot regulate electrolyte concentration without adequate drinking.
- Monitor hydration status during periods of heavy sweating, diarrhoea, travel stress, or prolonged exercise; electrolyte needs may increase temporarily.
- Horses prone to tying-up (PSSM1/PSSM2) may benefit from consistent electrolyte intake during warm weather or hard work, as electrolyte loss can affect muscle recovery.
Contraindications
- Not suitable for horses with renal disease or impaired kidney function unless under veterinary supervision, as electrolyte balance depends on kidney regulation.
- Avoid excessive use in stalled horses not sweating or exercising, as unnecessary sodium intake can encourage fluid retention.
- Not recommended for foals unless advised by a veterinarian.
Cautions
- May alter absorption or utilisation of certain medications, including diuretics or corticosteroids, due to shifts in fluid and electrolyte status.
Veterinary advice is recommended if your horse is on prescribed medication. - Do not combine with multiple electrolyte products simultaneously, as this can lead to excessive sodium or potassium intake.
FAQs
Q: Can I use this during travel or competition?
Yes - ElectrolytePLUS is ideal for preloading before travel or training. Feed 1 scoop approx. 1 hour before, then again afterwards if sweating has occurred.
Q: My horse has gastric ulcers - can I use this safely?
Yes. The powdered format is far gentler than hypertonic pastes, which can irritate sensitive stomachs. Feed with or after a small meal.
Q: Will my horse drink it in water?
Some horses will - especially if you gradually introduce it. Always offer a second bucket of plain water to allow choice.
Q: Can I feed this daily in summer?
Yes - particularly in hot weather, after work, or when travelling. Sodium, potassium, and chloride losses add up fast, and daily top-up supports resilience and recovery.
📌 Important Notes
Always ensure access to clean, fresh water when feeding electrolytes.
Best used post-exercise or during recovery in hot, humid, or stressful conditions.
Can also be preloaded 1 hour before hard work or travel for extra support.
