Giving hope to neglected horses
"There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the ponies happy and healthy. They thrive on the love and attention that the volunteers give. To witness the change within a few months of their arrival is amazing"
Alison, Founding Trustee
We’re so proud to support SAFE (Saving Abandoned Fly-Grazing Equines), a small but mighty UK charity on the frontline of equine rescue. SAFE takes in fly-grazed horses and ponies who’ve been abandoned, neglected, beaten, and often left to die - many tethered to chains, starved and forgotten.
Harrowing rescues, real impact
Their work is heart-wrenching - but vital. Picture overcrowded bare fields of dumped emaciated horses and ponies, or tethered to metal chains, regularly beaten. SAFE steps in to rescue these poor horses, often facing complex legal hurdles and immense challenges.
Introducing Koa - the brave colt who changed things
We'd been supporting SAFE for years with our charity discount, but in 2024 they shared a story that made us want to do more. It started with an abandoned colt, starved and covered in bite wounds, who was on the brink of euthanasia due to a land tenant who didn’t want him in with their mares.
SAFE were alerted - but the cost of saving lives like these? Upwards of £6,000 per rescue - and SAFE didn't have the funds to take him in.
They put out a desperate please across their socials, and thanks to the generosity of their followers, they raised enough to save this little colt. They named him Koa, meaning 'Brave,' and this young brave boy horse then had a chance at life.
As a result of Koa's rescue, SAFE were then alerted to
60 more horses dumped elsewhere, including a skeletal mare trying to nurse a newborn foal. Too weak to produce milk, the mare stood guard while her foal was stranded in a puddle, trying to drink, and unable to stand up. The image was devastating.
SAFE rallied national charities and eventually secured an intervention from the police and a vet, who assessed that the foal could survive, so the mare and foal were seized. The mare didn't make it, but the foal made it, after an extensive stay in hospital.
But that image of the tiny foal trying to drink from the puddle… Well. We couldn’t stand by and do nothing - we knew we had to do more.
