Eyebright in History & Tradition

If there’s one herb whose name perfectly matches its reputation, it’s eyebright. For centuries, nearly every recorded use has focused on vision, the eyes, and the sinuses —though its benefits stretch a little further into head-related issues too.

From the 16th century onwards, physicians and herbalists praised eyebright for its role in maintaining healthy eyesight. In 1586, English physician Walter Bailey wrote A Brief Treatise Touching the Preseruation of the Eie Sight , recommending it against cataracts and to help preserve vision.

Seventeenth-century herbalist Nicholas Culpeper even claimed eyebright could “ half spoil the spectacle makers trade ,” and recommended it for memory, vertigo, and inflammation of the eustachian tube - hinting at its broader role in head and sinus health.

Traditional ways to use it

Herbalist Maud Grieve recorded that in Scotland, highlanders steeped eyebright in hot milk, strained it, and brushed it onto the eyes with a feather. Across traditions, it has been valued for:

  • Acute inflammation of the nasal and ocular membranes
  • Profuse, watery discharges or acrid mucus
  • Hay fever symptoms (heat, burning, sneezing, red itchy eyes)
  • Eye fatigue and irritation
  • Sinus headaches and post-nasal drip

In 1922, herbalist Felter emphasised its use in hay fever, while early 20th-century physicians Finley Ellingwood and John Uri Lloyd also recommended it for “snuffles” in infants, and for adults with combined irritation of the eyes, ears, and upper respiratory tract.

A herbal first-aid for animals

Eyebright has even crossed into the veterinary world - an ethnoveterinary study from British Columbia notes its use for livestock with eye conditions.

What modern research shows

Today, eyebright is recognised for its antioxidant, mildly stimulating, and astringent qualities. It can help constrict the tiny blood vessels in nasal passages and conjunctival membranes, easing inflammation and reducing mucus. Herbalists use it for:

  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Sinusitis
  • Red, itchy eyes linked to hay fever
  • Coughs, sore throats, and ear irritation (when related to sinus congestion)

It’s often applied topically in compresses or washes for acute eye irritation, or used in homeopathic preparations for eye strain and conjunctivitis.

Whether in an ancient text or a modern study, eyebright consistently lives up to its nam - soothing the senses and clearing the way for brighter, more comfortable vision.

No surprise - we blend Eyebright into our EyeTonic , and our BreathePlus & PollenTonic / PollenCOMBO respiratory supplements.
