Composition & Feed Guide

Composition

100% pure L Tyrosine powder

Feed

2g/100kg bodyweight per day to start with, i.e. 10g/day for a 500kg horse.

  • 1-level 15ml scoop = 15g
  • Human grade.
  • Keep tightly sealed and in a cool place away from moisture and direct sunlight.

Clinical Considerations

L-Tyrosine is a naturally occurring amino acid involved in the body’s production of dopamine and other neurotransmitters. It is generally well tolerated by horses and is most suited to those needing gentle nutritional support for steadier energy and focus.

Advisories

  • Introduce gradually, as with all supplements, especially for older horses or those with metabolic challenges.
  • L-Tyrosine may support natural dopamine pathways. For horses with PPID who are not medicated, introduce slowly and monitor for changes in energy, behaviour, or sensitivity.
  • If your horse is receiving long-term prescription medication (other than Prascend), it’s sensible to check with your vet before adding Tyrosine, simply to ensure the full routine works comfortably together.
  • Avoid combining Tyrosine with multiple other dopamine-supportive herbs unless guided by your practitioner, as you may achieve the same effect with fewer inputs.

Contraindications

  • Do not feed to horses on Prascend (Pergolide). Tyrosine may overstimulate dopamine pathways when combined with dopamine-acting medication.
  • Not recommended for pregnant or nursing mares, as safety data for supplemental amino acids in these stages are limited.
  • Avoid in horses with known or suspected hyperthyroid activity, as Tyrosine is a precursor in thyroid hormone pathways (rare but sensible to include).
