Sage in History & Tradition

Although there are approximately 500 varieties of sage, Salvia officinalis is the variety that has been historically used in Western herbalism as the primary sage. And there’s a reason the word salvia is rooted in the Latin salvus - meaning to save or heal. Sage has carried its healing torch through the centuries, earning its stripes in everything from ancient Greek pharmacopeias to cutting-edge Alzheimer’s trials.

Sage is a medicine chest in a leaf. Traditionally used to strengthen memory and clarity of thought, it was once planted in monastery gardens and university courtyards to support learning and longevity. Early physicians revered it as a protector of the brain, and the modern science agrees - showing how sage helps preserve acetylcholine , the key neurotransmitter for memory, while also calming inflammation and oxidative stress in the nervous system.

But it doesn’t stop at the mind.

Sage is equally famous for cooling the fires of menopause- reducing hot flushes, easing night sweats, and offering gentle hormonal balance during this deeply transformative chapter. It regulates not just heat and sweat, but also mood, memory, and those subtle energetic shifts that can knock confidence off course.

In the gut, Sage proves its worth again - stimulating bile for better digestion, easing gas and sluggishness, and helping the body metabolise fats and oils more effectively. Its bitters get things moving; her tannins tighten and tone.

Sage is also a mighty antimicrobial, tackling throat infections, coughs, sinus issues, and internal inflammation. For those suffering with recurring bugs or low immunity, Sage acts as both a protector and purifier.

And let’s not forget Sage's spiritual side. As a sacred smudge herb in many cultures, sage is seen as a cleanser not just of space but of body, mind, and emotional clutter.

And so the list goes on and on...

  • Renowned support for hormone-related changes associated with perimenopause and menopause.
  • Longstanding traditional use in supporting oral health, and especially useful as a mouthwash.
  • Supports the skin, soothing eczema, psoriasis and other chronic skin eruptions, as well as insect bites, poison ivy or poison oak exposure.
  • Its essential oil makes for a great facial steam to balance oily complexions.
  • Its bitterness serves to stimulate digestive secretions.
  • Induces a relaxant effect on the smooth muscle of the digestive tract.
  • Stimulates appetite.
  • Used as a carminative to ease gas.
  • Its volatile oils are extremely useful in treating gut parasites.
