Overview

Apart from keeping body fluids in balance and providing essential natural electrolytes (which play a key role in normal nerve/muscle/ kidney function and blood sodium levels), sodium is also needed to balance potassium levels, both in grass and in the body, and especially in hot weather.

Sodium and chloride (salt) are the major electrolytes lost in sweat, followed by potassium, so we should feed around 20-25g salt daily to cover a baseline requirement. If you prefer to feed an electrolyte supplement, make sure this amount of salt is included in the composition.

Salt also encourages a horse to drink water; obvious for summer hydration but for winter too, as horses drink far less water in winter so we need to help encourage them to do so.

However, there is a small challenge - salt is hygroscopic , meaning it naturally attracts moisture. As a drying agent, it can alter the nutrient composition of minerals and vitamins when blended together. This can cause a mineral supplement with fine salt to lose its essential structure and potentially shorten its shelf life. For this reason, we choose not to include salt in our EquiVita.

It’s far better to use coarse salt nibs, which degrade much more slowly. This approach is also ideal for horses that dislike the taste of salt, as it avoids an overpowering salty flavour.

We sell pure unrefined, unpolluted, coarse-nib sea salt, certified by the Soil Association, available in bulk at seriously good prices compared to the supermarkets.

Fussy Eater?

Horses sometimes have their own opinions (and strong tastebuds!), so now and then a new blend might need a little extra encouragement. This doesn’t reflect the quality or efficacy of the product, but rather their natural instinct towards new flavours.

Check out our Fussy Eaters page, or send us a message - we've many helpful tips to make introducing new supplements easier.

Functional Nutritional Value

Soil Association certified sea salt from the Red Sea primarily provides essential electrolytes such as sodium and chloride for fluid balance and nerve/muscle function, along with trace minerals - potassium, calcium, magnesium, and natural iron - due to its minimal processing.

Clinical Considerations

Sea salt is an essential equine nutrient needed daily for hydration, electrolyte balance, and healthy nerve and muscle function. Most horses tolerate it extremely well when fed in appropriate amounts.

Advisories

  • Sea salt is a daily requirement for all horses - especially those prone to sweating, metabolic strain, or dehydration.
  • Introduce gradually if your horse is not used to added salt, particularly in very fussy or sensitive horses.
  • Ensure fresh water is always available, as salt increases thirst and supports normal hydration behaviour.

Contraindications

There are no major contraindications for salt when used at normal physiological levels, but:

  • Use caution in horses with acute renal impairment, uncontrolled heart disease, or severe oedema, and seek veterinary guidance.
  • Avoid over-supplementing if feeding fortified electrolytes; balance matters.

Practical Notes

  • Salt blocks are designed for cattle - horses cannot lick enough from a salt block to meet requirements, so it's always best to add into the feedbowl.
