A little stiffer, a little footy, or a little more uncomfortable these days?

Most horses don't suddenly become uncomfortable overnight. More often, it's the little things – the longer warm-up, reluctance on harder ground, increasing footiness, or that moment when you find yourself wondering whether they're simply feeling their age a bit more than they used to.

" T he vet is amazed at his progress - off normal Bute after just a few days on DuoBute.” SH

That's where we'd start with DuoBute – combining Meadowsweet and Willow Bark as gentle daily herbal support for horses who need help maintaining everyday comfort and ease of movement – particularly where support is likely to be needed for the long haul.

For acute flare-ups, that's when we'd look at TriBute instead - always handy to keep a small bottle on the shelf for the tougher days. Meanwhile, DuoBute is for keeping the everyday days comfortable.

Overview - everyday stiffness & comfort

There's a big difference between the horse who's suddenly sore and the horse who's simply becoming less comfortable in everyday life.

DuoBute was created for the second horse.

The older horse who's stiff for the first few minutes out of the stable. The horse with established wear and tear who benefits from daily support. The metabolically challenged horse who can become a little footy. Or simply the horse whose movement isn't quite as easy and free as it once was.

Why just two herbs?

Because they work beautifully together.

Meadowsweet and Willow Bark both contain naturally occurring plant compounds traditionally associated with comfort and a healthy inflammatory response, while bringing slightly different qualities to the blend.

Willow Bark has a long history as a comfort-support herb, while Meadowsweet complements it with its own naturally occurring salicylates alongside a traditional association with digestive comfort.

Together, they give DuoBute its particular place in the range - gentle, straightforward daily support for the horse who needs help staying comfortable over time.

Daily support or something stronger?

An important distinction.

If your horse needs ongoing everyday support, we'd start with DuoBute.

But if something's suddenly changed – an injury, acute flare-up, laminitic episode or a particularly difficult period – we'd look at TriBute for more targeted short-term support, alongside veterinary care where appropriate.

And if stiffness or discomfort is part of a wider picture – established joint changes, metabolic footiness or muscular problems – DuoBute can stay as the comfort layer while we address that underlying pattern separately.

DuoBute isn't designed to do every job - it's simply to make everyday comfort naturally easier to support.

How DuoBute fits into your horse's support plan

DuoBute is a good fit when your horse is showing clues that they might need a bit more everyday comfort support.

✔ A little stiffer coming out of the stable
✔ Takes longer to warm up and find their rhythm
✔ Doesn't quite stride out with the same freedom as before
✔ Feels a little footy on hard ground or changing surfaces
✔ Has established wear and tear and benefits from daily support
✔ Needs something that can comfortably become part of the everyday routine

In short: if this isn't an actual bad day problem, but more a case of keeping the ordinary days comfortable, DuoBute is where we'd start.

Supporting the wider picture

DuoBute's job is comfort. If there's an obvious reason behind that discomfort, that's where we'd support the wider horse rather than expecting DuoBute to do everything.

  • JSTTonic – where stiffness and age-related mobility changes are becoming a more established part of the picture.
  • JointReflexa – where you're looking beyond comfort towards longer-term support for joints, cartilage and connective tissue.
  • MetaTonic – where low-grade footiness or comfort concerns sit alongside metabolic patterns
  • PSSMFlex – where muscular stiffness, tension, or tying-up tendencies are part of the picture
  • Gut support blends such as SiboCARE or UlsaTonic – where digestive comfort is also part of the picture.

For tougher days:

  • TriBute – when additional short-term support is needed during flare-ups, heavier workloads, laminitic episodes, or more acute challenges

Foundation support

Comfortable movement rarely comes from one thing alone. Supporting your horse's baseline nutrition with a forage-based mineral blend such as VitaComplete or EquiVita helps provide the nutritional foundations that joints, muscles, connective tissue, and healthy inflammatory balance depend upon.

In summary

Use DuoBute as your daily comfort support for your horse, layering more targeted support around it when needed.

"Energetics" - how DuoBute works

DuoBute is deliberately simple: two traditional comfort herbs doing one job well.

Both Meadowsweet and Willow Bark contain naturally occurring salicylate compounds associated with normal inflammatory signalling and comfort. But they're not simply two versions of the same herb.

How the formula works

  • Supporting everyday comfort - Willow Bark brings the more direct comfort-supporting side of the partnership, with its naturally occurring salicin and related plant compounds supporting the body's normal inflammatory response and helping maintain comfortable movement.
  • Balancing comfort with the gut in mind - Meadowsweet brings its own naturally occurring salicylates, but with a rather different herbal character. Traditionally valued for digestive as well as musculoskeletal comfort, it gives DuoBute the gentler, more rounded quality we want from something designed to sit in the feed bowl every day.

Big picture

Inflammation is part of normal repair, adaptation and tissue housekeeping. But when everyday wear and tear begins to affect how comfortably a horse moves through ordinary life, that's when we look to DuoBute.

That's why it's become such a feed-room staple over the years.

DuoBute FAQs

Is DuoBute a natural alternative to Bute?

No herbal supplement is a direct replacement for prescribed phenylbutazone, and if a horse needs veterinary pain relief that's a veterinary conversation. DuoBute's role is different: gentle everyday herbal comfort support for horses needing longer-term help staying comfortable.

How do I know when my horse might need a little everyday comfort support?

It's usually the small changes you notice first - slightly stiffer coming out of the stable, a longer warm-up, not striding out quite as freely, harder ground bothers them more than it used to...

Nothing dramatic - but exactly the sort of horse we'd think about DuoBute for – where the aim isn't managing a crisis, but helping keep the ordinary days more comfortable.

What's the difference between DuoBute and TriBute?

Think everyday versus acute .

DuoBute is our gentler option for ongoing daily comfort support – older horses, established wear and tear, recurring stiffness, or those who simply aren't moving quite as freely as they once did.

TriBute is the one we'd reach for when something has suddenly changed – an acute flare-up, injury, or a laminitic episode.

In fact, plenty of owners keep their horse on DuoBute routinely and a small bottle of TriBute on the shelf for the tougher days. Hopefully gathering dust. 😉

Can I feed DuoBute every day long-term?

Yes – and this is where DuoBute earns its place.

It was designed as gentle daily comfort support, rather than something reserved for occasional flare-ups.

DuoBute can comfortably become part of the everyday feed bowl.

My horse is a little footy rather than stiff – is DuoBute still appropriate?

Absolutely - it's ideal for the footy/EMS horse.

But footiness is one of those clues where we'd also want to ask why. If it sits alongside a cresty neck, easy weight gain, grass sensitivity or other metabolic signs, we'd look at something such as MetaTonic for the underlying metabolic picture, while DuoBute supports everyday comfort.

Is DuoBute just for older or arthritic horses?

Not at all. Older horses are certainly some of our most enthusiastic DuoBute customers – where no-one's informed them they're supposed to grow old gracefully. 😉

But age isn't really the deciding factor - DuoBute is about everyday comfort. That might mean an older horse with established wear and tear, a younger horse who becomes stiff after work, a metabolically challenged horse who's prone to footiness, or simply one who needs a little additional support to stay comfortable and moving freely.

Why does DuoBute only contain two herbs?

It's all it needs.

Willow Bark and Meadowsweet both contain naturally occurring plant salicylates traditionally associated with comfort and a healthy inflammatory response, but they bring slightly different qualities to the partnership.

Willow Bark brings the more direct comfort-supporting side, while Meadowsweet has a long traditional association with digestive as well as musculoskeletal comfort.

We could have made the ingredients list longer - but we just couldn't find a good reason to.

Can I feed DuoBute alongside joint or mobility support?

Absolutely – because they're often doing different jobs.

If your horse also needs longer-term support for joints, cartilage or connective tissue, something such as JSTTonic or JointReflexa can sit underneath it to support that wider structural picture. Meanwhile, think of DuoBute as the comfort layer.

Likewise, if the real issue is muscular, metabolic or digestive, we'd support that underlying pattern separately while DuoBute continues doing its nice, straightforward job - helping keep the everyday days comfortable.
