Gotu kola in History & Tradition

Gotu kola has one of the longest and richest herbal histories on record. From the yogis of the Himalayas to Traditional Chinese Medicine physicians to modern clinical researchers, everyone seems to agree on one thing: this is a plant of extraordinary versatility.

In Ayurveda, it’s considered one of the premier rasayanas - rejuvenating herbs - especially for the elderly. Its reputation as a longevity tonic rests on its ability to sharpen memory, nourish the nervous system, and support graceful aging. Yogis took it as a meditation aid, believing it awakened the crown chakra and harmonised both hemispheres of the brain.

Modern research backs up these ancient insights. Gotu kola works through modulation of GABA, the calming neurotransmitter, which explains its anxiolytic and nervine qualities. It has shown promise in conditions ranging from anxiety and ADHD to cognitive decline and dementia, with studies suggesting it helps break down β-amyloid plaques and improves neuronal resilience.

But gotu kola’s gifts don’t stop at the brain. It’s a proven vulnerary (wound-healer) that encourages collagen production, reduces scarring, and speeds recovery after surgery or skin trauma. Chronic skin issues like eczema and psoriasis also benefit from its cooling, anti-inflammatory nature. Circulatory support is another cornerstone: gotu kola improves vascular tone, boosts peripheral circulation, and protects the cardiovascular system.

Energetically, it’s described as cooling, balancing, and gently drying - perfect for calming “hot” inflammatory states or sluggish, congested systems. As both an adaptogen and a rejuvenator, it helps the body handle stress while rebuilding strength at the same time.

No wonder it’s been called the ' herb of longevity and wisdom.'
