Overview
What is the lymphatic system, and why does it matter?
Think of the lymphatic system as the body’s second circulatory system - a vast network of vessels under the skin that carries lymph, a watery fluid that helps clear out waste, toxins, and excess fluids. It’s packed with lymphocytes - the immune system’s frontline defence force - and plays a major role in keeping the body clean, balanced, and healthy.
Unlike blood, lymph doesn’t have a heart to pump it around. It relies entirely on movement and breathing to flow - which is why horses standing still for long periods can develop ‘puffy legs’ or fluid build-up.
And with horses being around 70% water, any sluggishness in this fluid system can have big knock-on effects. Stagnant lymph means toxins get trapped, swelling takes hold, and the immune system struggles - opening the door to infections like lymphangitis.
