Looking for deeper metabolic support?
When your horse needs more than single-focus support, MetaCOMBO brings together our three key blends:
- DuoBute (anti-inflammatory)
- Acetyl L-Carnitine (crest/leptin-resistance)
- MetaTonic (metabolic balance)
for comprehensive metabolic, anti-inflammatory, and cellular resilience support combined in our easy-to-feed, comprehensive 3-in-1 formula.
Overview
Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) has been widely recognised since the mid-2000s, often linked to obesity, fat deposits, and chronic laminitis. However, research shows that even non-obese horses can develop insulin resistance (IR), making careful dietary management essential.
Sensitive horses struggle with carbohydrate-rich diets, especially from lush grass loaded with natural sugars. These sugars, if unmanaged, can trigger a cascade of metabolic issues- from inflammation to insulin resistance and even laminitis.
MetaTonic provides targeted nutritional support to help manage these challenges naturally and effectively.
Notable key benefits
🌿 Clears hepatic and lymphatic congestion.
🌿 Regulates glucose and insulin rhythm.
🌿 Supports circulation and tissue oxygenation.
🌿 Provides antioxidant benefits during detox cycles.
🌿 Feeds back into the gut–liver axis to keep microbial ecology balanced.
For the latest EMS insights, see our A-Z Equine Condition/EMS/IR page in the Advice Centre above.
Is MetaTonic Right for My Horse?
Functional Fit – where MetaTonic belongs in metabolic support
MetaTonic is designed as foundational, day-to-day nutritional support for horses with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS/IR).
It supports the glucose–insulin axis, circulation, liver function, and hindgut balance, helping the metabolic system operate more steadily in horses that are prone to sugar sensitivity, inflammation, or laminitic risk.
When a horse needs ongoing metabolic stability, MetaTonic is the ideal choice .
→ MetaTonic is:
- for horses with EMS or insulin resistance
- for managing metabolic sensitivity
- for supporting stable glucose–insulin rhythms
- for hoof comfort and circulation in laminitis-prone horses
- for seasonal metabolic flare-ups (spring/autumn)
- for long-term metabolic maintenance alongside correct diet and movement
→ MetaTonic is not:
- an emergency or acute laminitis intervention
- a substitute for dietary control or forage management
- a fast-acting pain or inflammation formula
- a targeted crest- or leptin-resistance solution on its own
- suitable during the acute phase of laminitis
Those roles belong to other blends used instead of or alongside MetaTonic.
Which blend - MetaTonic, Acetyl L-Carnitine, or MetaCOMBO?
Each supports a different layer of metabolic health:
→ MetaTonic
Metabolic balance | Circulation | Hoof support
Best as the daily foundation for EMS/IR horses needing steadier metabolism, healthier glucose handling, and long-term hoof comfort.
→ Acetyl L-Carnitine
Fat metabolism | Crest tension | Leptin resistance
Best when crestiness, regional fat pads, or stubborn weight patterns suggest impaired fatty-acid utilisation or leptin resistance.
→ MetaCOMBO
Comprehensive metabolic support | Inflammation | Cellular resilience
Best when horses show multiple metabolic stress signals- footiness, crest changes, leptin-resistance (permanently hungry), sugar sensitivity - and need combined support in one easy-to-feed blend.
Quick guide - when to choose which?
| IF YOUR HORSE… | BEST CHOICE |
|---|---|
| Has EMS or insulin resistance | MetaTonic |
| Is laminitis-prone and needs daily metabolic support | MetaTonic |
| Shows seasonal metabolic flare-ups | MetaTonic |
| Has a firm crest or stubborn fat pads | Acetyl L-Carnitine |
| Struggles with weight despite strict diet | Acetyl L-Carnitine |
| Shows combined footiness, crest change, and leptin-resistance | MetaCOMBO |
| Needs broad, all-in-one metabolic support | MetaCOMBO |
In short
If your horse needs steady, ongoing metabolic support to help manage EMS, insulin sensitivity, and laminitic risk, MetaTonic provides a calm, nutritional foundation.
Where crest tension, fat metabolism, or inflammation dominate, layering with Acetyl L-Carnitine or choosing MetaCOMBO offers more targeted or comprehensive support.

Composition Glossary
- Berberis vulgaris (Barberry) - A naturally bitter, biome-balancing herb traditionally used to support metabolic harmony. Its alkaloid-rich profile helps maintain a healthy gut–liver axis, supporting clearer glucose signalling and steadier insulin patterns - key for EMS/IR horses.
- Galium aparine (Cleavers) - A gentle lymphatic tonic that supports fluid balance and toxin clearance. Helps ease metabolic congestion and assists the body’s natural elimination pathways.
- Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel) - A soothing carminative that supports digestion, comfort, and smooth gut motility. Helps counter gas, tension, and digestive disruption often seen in insulin-resistant horses, while offering antioxidant nourishment.
- Galega officinalis (Goat’s Rue) - A historic metabolic-support herb known for its role in balancing glucose handling. Traditionally used to support healthy insulin dynamics, Galega offers targeted nutritional reassurance for EMS and leptin-resistant horses. Ecologically grown for us - biodynamic & organic.
- Crataegus oxyacanthoides (Hawthorn) - A time-honoured circulatory botanical that supports healthy blood flow to hooves and peripherals. Its gentle tonifying action helps nourish the hoof capsule, supporting long-term metabolic resilience.
- Silybum marianum (Milk Thistle) - Renowned for liver nourishment, supporting detoxification pathways and cellular protection, helping the liver process metabolic waste more efficiently - an essential pillar of EMS care.
- Urtica dioica (Nettle) - Nutrient-dense, rich in plant-based minerals, chlorophyll, and natural antioxidants. Supports metabolism and circulation, alongside cleansing support to the kidneys and lymphatic system.
- Tabebuia impetiginosa (Lapacho/Pau d’Arco) - A powerful botanical known to support microbial balance, helping maintain a healthy internal terrain, complementing the metabolic, inflammatory, and immune aspects of EMS management.
- Smilax ornata (Sarsaparilla) - A harmonising herb that supports toxin clearance and maintains a balanced internal environment. Traditionally used to aid skin, hoof, and metabolic health - especially beneficial for the adipose fat crest areas and glucose sensitivity.

Fussy Eater?
Horses sometimes have their own opinions (and strong tastebuds!), so now and then a new blend might need a little extra encouragement. This doesn’t reflect the quality or efficacy of the product, but rather their natural instinct towards new flavours.

Clinical Considerations/Veterinary Reference
Advisories
- Feed alongside a low-NSC, fibre-based diet with 24/7 access to quality meadow hay, to support stable glucose and insulin rhythms.
- Consider pairing MetaTonic with Acetyl L-Carnitine(for crest/neck tension and metabolic fatty-acid utilisation) and DuoBute(for inflammatory comfort during EMS flare-ups). See our MetaCOMBO .
- Support circulation and hoof function through daily movement, even in-hand, to encourage glucose uptake via muscle pathways.
- Monitor body condition, water intake, digital pulses, and crest firmness during the first weeks as the metabolic axis responds.
Contraindications
- Not suitable for pregnant or nursing mares due to hormonally active and cleansing botanicals (e.g., Galega, Smilax, Berberis, Lapacho).
- Use caution alongside prescription metabolic medications, steroid medications, or hormone-modifying drugs; veterinary guidance is advised.
- Not advised during an acute laminitic episode- stabilise the acute phase first (ice, vet, strict forage-only regime), then introduce MetaTonic during recovery once your horse has been comfortably walking for at least 2-weeks.
- Not recommended for horses with significant hepatic compromise unless under professional supervision, as cleansing herbs increase liver workload.
