Overview

Acetyl L-Carnitine (Alcar) is a naturally occurring amino acid that transforms how your horse’s body fuels itself. Energy and metabolism promoting, Alcar e ncourages healthy weight management by transporting fats into cells for energy, as well as supporting healthy cell and tissue function, brain health, memory and attention.

An acetylated form of the naturally occurring amino acid, L-Carnitine, it facilitates the transport of fatty acids - which, like glucose, are fuels for cellular respiration - into the mitochondria (the energy-producing centre of all cells), thus playing an important role in cellular energy production.
Recent Swedish research shows that dietary supplements such as Alcar and Lipoic acid have a positive or protective effect on mitochondrial function. It also may be able to slow the aging process. Read the full article click here .
Meanwhile, Dr Kellon has also posted on the benefits of feeding Alcar to our horses in her Dr K's Horse Sense series - Acetyl-L-Carnitine – The Powerful, Versatile Nutrient You Never Heard Of and Acetyl L-Carnitine for Horses

Is Acetyl L Carnitine Right for My Horse

🌿 Ideal for horses who...

  • Need nutritional support for cellular energy, muscle tone, and metabolic function.
  • Tire easily in training or lose stamina during recovery work.
  • Have metabolic challenges such as EMS, insulin resistance, or PSSM that affect energy use.
  • Are older horses who’ve lost topline or appear 'flat' in their energy and focus.
  • Are on restricted diets or low-starch regimes that may limit natural carnitine synthesis.
  • Are in regular work and benefit from extra fuel efficiency and muscle recovery support.

⚠️ Not suitable for horses who...

  • Are already receiving multiple metabolic or performance supplements providing overlapping amino acids without professional guidance.
  • Are pregnant or nursing mares - safety data is limited.

If your horse needs clean, efficient energy at a cellular level - without stimulant herbs or sugars — Acetyl L-Carnitine is the right choice to help them power vitality from within.
