Human studies indicate that a large quantity of magnesium, 56 molecules for each molecule of sugar, is necessary for this process, suggesting that horses consuming high-sugar or high-starch diets may require substantial magnesium to effectively process these foods. Magnesium is crucial for proper insulin function and glucose uptake into cells, with a deficiency potentially leading to issues such as insulin resistance, laminitis, and poor hoof quality. Observations show that horses with signs of insulin resistance, such as a cresty neck and localised fat deposits, show positive responses to magnesium supplements within weeks, with improvements in hoof structure and function following within months.
