📌 Fussy Eater?

Some horses may have their own opinions (and strong tastebuds!), so now and then a new blend might need a little extra encouragement. This doesn’t reflect the quality or efficacy of the product, but rather their natural instinct towards new flavours.

Overview

Horses thrive on routine, and significant changes - such as the loss of a companion - can deeply affect their physical and emotional health. Emotional stress can take a toll on the heart, liver, and nervous system, leaving your horse unsettled and struggling to adapt.

At the core of emotional processing is the limbic system, a part of the brain that governs emotions, intuition, and memory. Central to this system is the amygdala, which plays a key role in managing emotional responses. For horses experiencing grief, specific herbs can help regulate amygdala function and support emotional balance.

  • Melissa officinalis (lemon balm): Known as the “herb of joy,” lemon balm is exceptional for soothing emotional distress, with herbalist Culpepper famously noting its ability to “bring joy into the melancholy.” It offers gentle support for both the heart and emotions.
  • Crataegus oxycanthoides (hawthorn berry): Additionally, hawthorn berry is renowned for its ability to address the physical and emotional aspects of heartbreak, nourishing and strengthening the heart.
  • Adaptogen herbs: Complementing these are adaptogen herbs, which help the horse ‘adapt’ to stress, gradually normalising their emotional response.

HarmonyTonic combines these powerful herbs to offer holistic support for your horse’s emotional and physical wellbeing during times of change.

Recommended

  • Depending on the impact of loss, especially for the older horse, it's recommended to feed HarmonyTonic for 1-3 months.
  • The other consideration is how long the horse has been experiencing grief. If longer than a week or two, inflammatory processes would also have been triggered in the body. Consider feeding DuoBute to reduce inflammation; equally feeding micronised Linseed (not linseed oil) is not only a high-nutrient feed but also high in the anti-inflammatory omega-3 essential amino acid, supporting low grade systemic inflammation.

Safety/Contraindications

  • Pregnant or nursing mares - always seek veterinary advice before feeding.
