Shouldn't I be trying to stop my horse coughing?

Not necessarily – because a cough is a clearance mechanism.

It helps the respiratory system move mucus, dust and other unwanted material up and out of the airways.

What if my horse is coughing up lots of mucus?

A productive cough can look dramatic – particularly when your horse deposits the evidence somewhere you'd really rather they hadn't.

How quickly should KoffTonic work?

How your horse responds will depend on why they're coughing in the first place, how irritated the airways are, whether mucus needs clearing and whether the original trigger is still hanging around.

If dusty forage is continually irritating the respiratory tract, for example, no herbal tincture can wave a magic wand over the haynet.

What matters more is if the cough is becoming easier and less irritating, mucus is clearing, and your horse remaining bright and comfortable.

When does my horse's cough need a vet rather than KoffTonic?

If your horse has a persistent or worsening cough, fever, significant nasal discharge, increased breathing effort, reduced appetite, poor performance or seems generally unwell, we'd speak to your vet.

And if breathing is obviously difficult or distressed, that's not a wait-and-see situation.

Even an apparently mild cough deserves investigation if it keeps returning, because coughing tells us that something is irritating or affecting the respiratory system.
