When people search for a mineral balancer for horses on hay, they're usually looking for a simple way to replace the nutrients that become harder to obtain once fresh grazing is no longer the main forage source.

" My 26 year old cob is thriving. Great overall improvements using Vitacomplete." LH.

If hay makes up most of your horse's forage - whether through winter feeding or life on a track system - it often starts with the best intentions... a mineral balancer, a scoop of linseed, some salt... and before long there are three tubs on the feed room shelf and a nagging feeling you've probably forgotten something.

This is where we look at VitaComplete.

VitaComplete is our complete daily nutritional foundation for horses living primarily on hay or conserved forage, combining essential minerals, amino acids, micronised linseed and sea salt in one balanced blend to help support healthy hooves, coat quality, metabolism, and long-term wellbeing.

Instead of building your horse's nutritional foundation one product at a time, VitaComplete brings the key pieces together in one straightforward daily blend - so you know the essentials are covered and can get on with enjoying your horse.

No unnecessary fillers or extras - just the core nutrients your horse actually needs, in one easy routine.

Overview - why hay changes your horse's nutritional needs

Just like any building needs a solid foundation, your horse's health depends on one too.

That foundation? The right balance of key trace elements found in nature – in forms the equine body recognises, and knows how to utilise.

And if there's one thing we've learned over the years (amongst many other things!) - most horse owners already know that the foundations matter.

The challenge is that modern forage doesn't always provide everything the horse needs - and building those foundations properly can quickly turn into multiple tubs, measuring scoops, and second-guessing whether you've forgotten something.

That's exactly why we created VitaComplete.

And for the horse that has hay as their main forage source, i.e. a track system or during winter, it combines the core elements many forage-based diets need most often - minerals, essential fatty acids, and salt - in one balanced daily blend.

No complicated calculations, and no separate products to juggle. Just a straightforward way to cover the nutritional basics properly, so the rest of your horse's feeding plan has something solid to build on.

How VitaComplete fits into your feeding plan

VitaComplete is a good fit when you want your horse’s entire nutritional foundation covered in one go – whether your horse is on summer grazing with hay in the diet, a track system, or winter - where hay features as the main forage source. Simple, complete, and done properly.

✔ You want minerals, salt, and essential fatty acids all handled together
✔ You don’t want to juggle separate supplements for the basics - one complete solution rather than building things piece by piece
✔ Coat, hooves, or condition feel like they need more than just minerals alone
✔ You want a straightforward daily routine that covers all the essentials

In short? if you want to cover every forage-based nutrient base in one simple step, VitaComplete is the all-in-one foundation that keeps things consistent and easy.

How VitaComplete fits into your horse’s support plan

VitaComplete isn’t a product you “add in” – it’s the foundation everything else builds on.

Rather than building your horse’s nutritional base in separate steps, VitaComplete brings minerals, essential fatty acids, and salt together in one balanced daily blend.

This makes it ideal for owners who want to know the basics are properly covered, without needing to juggle multiple supplements or second-guess what might be missing.

Once that foundation is in place, any additional support can be layered on top with far more consistency.

For horses already on a support plan, VitaComplete sits underneath it, helping the system respond and maintain balance more effectively.

Fussy eater?

Horses sometimes have their own opinions (and strong tastebuds!), so introduce gradually, building up over several days. See our Fussy Eaters guide for helpful tips if needed.

Energetic architecture - the foundation behind the formula

Energetic Architecture explains how a formula has been structured to support the body's natural physiology.

Unlike our herbal blends, VitaComplete isn't trying to steer the body in a particular direction - its job is much simpler.

It provides the nutritional building blocks that forage and hay-based diets don't always supply consistently, helping ensure the body has the resources it depends upon every day.

Think of it as providing the raw materials that allow biology to get on with its job.

How the formula is built

VitaComplete has been designed specifically for horses whose diet relies largely on hay or conserved forage, where minerals, essential fatty acids, and sodium can all become limiting over time.

Rather than owners having to build those foundations from several separate products, the formula brings everything together in one balanced daily blend.

The ingredients naturally fall into five complementary jobs:

  1. Replacing key mineralsMagnesium, Zinc, Copper, Selenium & Phosphorus
    - Providing the essential minerals that support normal cellular activity, enzyme function, and countless everyday metabolic processes.
  2. Supplying essential fatty acidsMicronised Linseed
    - Providing naturally occurring omega fatty acids to nourish cell membranes, skin, coat, and wider metabolic health.
  3. Maintaining electrolyte balanceSoil Association Certified Sea Salt
    - Helping support hydration, nerve function, and fluid balance by replacing the sodium and chloride often lacking in forage-based diets.
  4. Providing essential amino acidsL-Lysine & Methionine
    - Supplying two key amino acids that support normal tissue maintenance, muscle development, hoof quality, and protein metabolism.
  5. Protecting cellsVitamin E & Selenium
    - Supporting the body's natural antioxidant defences during the normal demands of everyday life.

Big picture

Winter feeding isn't simply summer feeding with hay instead of grass - the nutritional picture changes too.

VitaComplete has been built to reflect that change, bringing together the nutrients most commonly needed when hay becomes the main forage source.

It simply gives the body what it needs to do it well.

Recommended

Minerals are only part of the nutritional picture.

Fresh growing grass naturally provides essential fatty acids and contributes to the horse's daily sodium intake. However, once the forage source becomes predominantly hay-based, those nutrients become much harder to obtain in meaningful amounts.

That's why VitaComplete includes both micronised linseed and certified organic sea salt alongside the mineral specification.

The aim is to simplify things. Rather than building your horse's foundation from separate mineral, linseed, and salt products, VitaComplete brings the key pieces together in one balanced daily blend.

NB: Some horses don't enjoy the taste of salt, so to prevent VitaComplete taste completely of salt, we include 10g certified salt in the formula, but you may wish to add more yourself when needed, i.e. if in hard work, sweating , or during hotter weather.

Clinical considerations

Advisories

Suitable for long-term daily use as part of a forage-based feeding plan, and compatible with all EquiNatural support programmes.

Introduce gradually over several days and ensure access to fresh water and plain salt.

Contraindications

Not suitable alongside other full-dose mineral balancers due to the risk of unnecessary duplication.

VitaComplete FAQs

Why would I choose VitaComplete instead of EquiVita?

Both provide the mineral foundation your horse needs, but they're designed for different situations.

EquiVita is our mineral-only foundation for horses living mainly on spring and summer grazing.

VitaComplete is our complete 3-in-1 foundation for horses relying largely on hay or conserved forage, combining minerals, essential fatty acids, and salt in one balanced daily blend.

If your horse spends much of the year on hay, a track system, or winter forage, VitaComplete is usually the better fit.

Do horses on hay need different nutrition to horses on grass?

In many ways, yes.

Although both grass and hay are forms of forage, they're not nutritionally identical.

Fresh growing grass naturally provides higher levels of essential fatty acids, along with varying amounts of moisture, vitamins, and other plant compounds that gradually decline as grass is cut, dried, and stored as hay.

Hay also tends to provide less sodium, making salt an important part of many forage-based feeding plans.

That's why VitaComplete was specifically designed for horses relying largely on hay. Alongside the mineral profile, it includes micronised linseed to help replace the essential fatty acids that fresh grazing naturally provides, together with sea salt to support sodium intake.

Think of it this way: winter feeding isn't simply summer feeding with hay instead of grass. The nutritional picture changes too - and VitaComplete was formulated to reflect that.

Why does hay change the nutritional picture?

Fresh grass naturally provides essential fatty acids and contributes towards your horse's sodium intake.

As forage becomes predominantly hay-based, those nutrients become much less available.

That's why VitaComplete doesn't simply replace minerals - it also includes micronised linseed and sea salt, helping reflect the nutritional changes that occur when horses move onto conserved forage.

Why have you combined minerals, linseed, and salt?

Because this is exactly how many owners end up feeding.

Over the years we've found that lots of people were buying a mineral balancer, adding linseed, remembering salt... and then wondering whether they'd forgotten something!

VitaComplete simply brings those key building blocks together in one balanced blend, making everyday feeding easier and removing much of the guesswork.

Do I still need to feed extra salt?

VitaComplete includes 10-grams sea salt as part of its formulation because sodium is one of the nutrients most commonly lacking in forage-based diets.

However, horses in hard work, those sweating heavily, or during prolonged hot weather will still benefit from additional plain salt depending on their individual needs.

Can I feed VitaComplete all year round?

Absolutely - many owners feed VitaComplete throughout the year, particularly where hay remains a significant part of the diet.

Others prefer to use EquiVita during the grazing season before moving onto VitaComplete once winter feeding begins.

Both approaches work well.

Can I feed VitaComplete alongside your herbal supplements?

Yes - VitaComplete provides the nutritional foundation that sits underneath every EquiNatural support programme.

Whether you're supporting the gut, joints, skin, hormones, or metabolism, having the nutritional basics properly covered gives the body the building blocks it needs to respond more effectively.

My horse already looks healthy. Do they still need VitaComplete?

Many owners feed VitaComplete precisely because they want to keep things that way.

Modern forage doesn't always provide the full range of nutrients horses evolved to rely on, even when the hay is excellent quality.

Rather than waiting for nutritional gaps to appear, VitaComplete helps provide consistent day-to-day nutritional support from the outset.

Can I feed VitaComplete alongside another mineral balancer?

We generally wouldn't recommend feeding two full-dose mineral balancers together.

Doing so can lead to unnecessary duplication of minerals and trace elements.

Why do you include linseed?

Micronised linseed provides naturally occurring essential fatty acids that become much less available once fresh grazing is replaced by hay.

These fats contribute to healthy cell membranes, skin, coat, and wider metabolic function, making them an important part of winter nutrition.

Why do you include lysine and methionine?

Minerals are only part of the nutritional picture.

Lysine and methionine are essential proteins in amino acid form involved in normal tissue maintenance, hoof quality, muscle metabolism, and many everyday cellular processes.

Including them alongside the mineral profile helps create a more complete nutritional foundation.

Is VitaComplete suitable for barefoot horses?

Many barefoot owners choose VitaComplete because healthy hooves rely on much more than trimming alone.

Strong hoof horn depends on consistent mineral nutrition, adequate amino acids, essential fatty acids, and good overall management.

VitaComplete helps provide those nutritional building blocks as part of a balanced forage-based feeding programme.

Why do you call VitaComplete a "complete foundation"?

Because it covers more than minerals alone.

Winter and forage-based diets often require attention to minerals, essential fatty acids, and sodium together.

Rather than asking owners to build those foundations from several separate products, VitaComplete brings them together in one balanced daily routine.

It simply gives the body the raw materials it depends upon every day.

Is VitaComplete just for horses with problems?

Not at all - VitaComplete was designed for everyday horses eating everyday forage.

Its purpose isn't to correct a problem - it's to help prevent nutritional gaps developing in the first place, giving every other aspect of your horse's feeding programme a stronger foundation to build upon.
