Andrographis in History & Tradition

Lovingly dubbed the “King of Bitters”, this tropical plant has deep roots in the healing traditions of India and Southeast Asia, where it’s long been used to cool inflammation, clear infection, and restore vitality. In Ayurveda, it’s prized for its ability to pacify ‘pitta’ and ‘kapha’ - the hot and heavy doshas - while stoking the digestive fire (agni) and clearing toxic residue (ama). In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it’s a go-to for clearing heat from the blood, detoxifying the body, and soothing inflamed throats, lungs, or skin.

But what really sets andrographis apart is its broad-spectrum herbal brilliance. Traditionally given for fevers, flus, digestive complaints, liver stagnation, and even snake bites, its modern credentials are just as compelling. With recent scientific research on the up, andrographis has been studied for everything from colds and flu to liver detox, immune modulation, and even cancer cell inhibition - all thanks to its powerhouse compound, andrographolide.

In practice, this intensely bitter herb works like a botanical circuit breaker: cooling fevers, calming inflammation, and rebooting sluggish liver and gut function. It helps the body respond more intelligently to immune challenges, especially in the acute phase of infection.

What’s more, its affinity with the liver makes it a potent ally for detox protocols, helping horses clear excess heat, systemic inflammation, or microbial imbalance - particularly useful after antibiotics, dewormers, or vaccinations.

Andrographis is also a hero during seasonal transitions - when the immune system is under pressure, or the gut needs a bitter tonic to regain its rhythm.
