MELLOWMARE for Horses | Organic Herbal Support for Hormonal & Seasonal Mares 🍂OCTOBER SALE - 20%-OFF - USE CODE RESET20

Lovely one week. Squealing, swishing, sensitive and thoroughly unimpressed with you the next?”
"T he change in her is utterly unbelievable - a miracle!” Sue F.
She's not “being mare-ish” - she's telling you there's a pattern.
If your mare's behaviour changes with her seasons, she may become more reactive, distracted, or se nsitive, even unusually interested in other horses – or simply feel rather less like herself at certain points in her cycle.
MellowMare is our valerian-free organic herbal blend for mares who need extra support with cycle-linked tension, sensitivity and physical comfort, helping them feel calmer and more comfortable through their natural hormonal rhythm.
NB. If she's unsettled all month , rather than noticeably changing around her seasons, we'd look beyond hormones – StressTonic may be the better place to start, but get in touch and we'll talk it through.

Overview - when your mare changes with her seasons
Hormones are a fact of life for mares – but for us human caretakers, managing a half-ton of hormonal sass can sometimes feel like a full-time job.
Some sail through their seasons with barely a flick of the tail, while others make the calendar fairly easy to guess.
The squealing and obvious flirting is easy to notice – but sometimes it's subtler. She feels tight through her body, or she's suddenly sensitive to grooming or being touched. Her concentration disappears, she becomes clingier with other horses, sharper under saddle, or unusually grumpy about things she'd normally take in her stride.
Then a few days later, your usual mare is back.
What's actually going on?
A mare's cycle isn't simply an ovary switching hormones on and off. Changing reproductive hormones interact with physical sensation, uterine activity and the nervous system – so what looks like a behavioural problem may simply be a mare responding to how she feels in her body.
This is an important distinction - we're not trying to stop a healthy mare having seasons, and we're not trying to flatten her personality. The aim is to support her through the cycle so that normal hormonal changes don't dominate how comfortable, settled or able to concentrate she feels.
That's the thinking behind MellowMare. The formula combines herbs traditionally used across several parts of that picture – including Vitex for reproductive-hormonal support, Viburnum and Rubus leaf for muscular and uterine comfort, and Matricaria , Melissa and Verbena for nervous-system support – with wider nutritional and herbal support around her.
In short, the clue is that there's a pattern. Good days, noticeably different days, then back again – MellowMare is where we'd start.
How MellowMare fits into your mare's support plan
MellowMare is a good fit when the change in your mare is clearly linked to her cycle.
Choose MellowMare if your mare:
✔ becomes noticeably more reactive or irritable around her seasons
✔ loses focus or becomes harder to be around at predictable points in her cycle
✔ shows physical tension alongside the behavioural change – tail swishing, squealing, sensitivity or discomfort
✔ becomes particularly unsettled through spring when cycling is more active
✔ is otherwise generally settled, but her hormones seem to turn the volume up
In short: if you can almost put a date in the diary for when your lovely mare temporarily becomes that mare , MellowMare is where we'd start.
- Supporting the wider picture
- Valerian – useful for when an otherwise manageable hormonal phase becomes particularly intense or reactive.
- DuoBute – where there's physical discomfort or muscular tension during her season.
- StressTonic – if she's unable to properly switch off outside of her seasons, we'd look more towards chronic stress than blaming her hormones.
- Foundation support
Hormonal balance doesn't sit in isolation from the rest of the horse.
Good forage, adequate protein, balanced minerals, healthy digestion and appropriate turnout and movement all help provide the nutritional foundations the endocrine and reproductive systems rely upon.
Supporting your mare's baseline nutrition with a forage-balanced mineral solution such as EquiVita or VitaComplete helps create the conditions for healthier metabolic and hormonal function and more consistent long-term results.
In summary
Use MellowMare when her cycle changes her.
If she's generally herself between seasons but becomes noticeably more sensitive, uncomfortable or reactive as her hormones shift, MellowMare provides targeted support through those cyclical changes.

What's in MellowMare?
Each herb in MellowMare works in harmony to nurture hormonal balance, emotional steadiness, and physical comfort through the mare’s natural cycles.
- Vitex agnus-castus (Agnus castus berry) – A key botanical for hormonal equilibrium, supporting the pituitary–ovarian axis, helping to stabilise irregular or heightened oestrus cycles without affecting fertility.
- Matricaria recutita (Chamomile) – A gentle nervine and digestive soother that supports the gut–nervous system. Helps ease tension, both emotional and muscular.
- Viburnum opulus (Cramp Bark) – Renowned antispasmodic traditionally used to ease uterine tension and support comfortable muscular relaxation.
- Melissa officinalis (Lemon Balm) – A gentle nervine herb that settles restlessness and irritability, while also supporting digestive tone.
- Silybum marianum (Milk Thistle) – A hepatic tonic that aids healthy liver metabolism of hormones, helping to clear excess oestrogen and maintain balanced endocrine function.
- Rubus idaeus (Raspberry Leaf) – Long valued for supporting tone and elasticity in the uterine muscles, promoting natural cycle rhythm and comfort throughout the mare’s seasons.
- Rosa canina (Rosehips) – Rich in bioavailable vitamin C and antioxidants, nourishing connective tissue, adrenal health, and complementing overall systemic resilience. (Not available in tincture form.)
- Salvia officinalis (Sage) – Traditionally used to help maintain balance within the reproductive and digestive systems.
- Verbena officinalis (Vervain) – A gentle nervine that helps release emotional tightness and restore balance between body and mind.
- Achillea millefolium *(Yarrow) – A time-honoured herb for females. A circulatory and hormonal tonic known to support smooth menstrual cycles, aiding uterine tone while helping to maintain systemic equilibrium.

"Energetics" - how MellowMare works
When it comes to herbs and herbal formulations, you may have heard herbalists talk about energetics . It's simply the way we describe how a herb or formula has been designed to support the body in a balanced and purposeful way. The science helps us understand why that structure works.
MellowMare is built around one simple idea: a mare's season isn't just about hormones. So rather than trying to suppress her natural cycle, MellowMare supports the different systems involved in helping her move through it more comfortably.
How the formula works
- Supporting her natural hormonal rhythm - Vitex sits at the heart of the formula, traditionally used to support normal reproductive-hormonal balance and help mares whose behaviour noticeably changes around their seasons.
- Supporting physical comfort - Sometimes what looks like hormonal behaviour starts with how the mare feels in her body. Cramp Bark, Raspberry Leaf and Yarrow have a long history of use around female reproductive health, helping support normal muscular tone and physical comfort through the cycle.
- Supporting a softer nervous response - Hormonal fluctuation and physical tension can make some mares noticeably more reactive, sensitive or distracted. Chamomile, Lemon Balm and Vervain support the nervous system without trying to switch the mare off - helping her feel more settled while still remaining herself.
- Supporting the wider picture The reproductive system doesn't operate in isolation. Milk Thistle, Sage and Rosehips provide broader nutritional and herbal support around normal metabolism, tissue health and resilience while the hormonal cycle continues doing what it is designed to do.
Big picture
MellowMare is there for the mare who's perfectly herself for much of the month, but whose normal hormonal rhythm sometimes makes her feel physically uncomfortable, unusually sensitive or simply less able to cope with everyday life.
Support the rhythm, ease the tension, soften the response - and let her get back to being herself.
Clinical considerations / veterinary reference
Advisories
- Use cautiously alongside sedatives or steroid medications, as metabolism may be affected.
- Monitor mares with reproductive disorders (e.g. cystic ovaries, pituitary imbalance); introduce gradually and observe.
Contraindications
- Pregnant or nursing mares – not suitable (uterine-toning/hormonally active herbs).
- Do not combine with hormonal medications (e.g. Regumate, altrenogest) unless under vet supervision.
MellowMare FAQs
Is MellowMare what people call a “moody mare supplement”? How do I know if my mare's behaviour is hormonal?
The biggest clue is usually the pattern .
She's perfectly happy being groomed one week, then suddenly she's sensitive and swishing her tail, distracted under saddle, squealing at her neighbours or behaving as though you've personally offended her by tightening the girth.
Then a few days later... your usual mare is back.
NB. If she's tense, reactive or unhappy all month , rather than noticeably changing around her seasons, we'd look beyond hormones rather than automatically reaching for a mare supplement, so get in touch and we can talk through it.
My mare isn't particularly “mare-ish” – could MellowMare still be right for her?
Absolutely. Not every hormonal mare reads the handbook and starts squealing at geldings. 😉
Sometimes the signs are softer; she may become tighter through her body, clingier with another horse, or simply seem a little less comfortable in herself at certain points in her cycle.
That's why we look for changes from her "normal", rather than expecting every mare to show the same behaviour.
Will MellowMare stop my mare having seasons?
No – and we wouldn't want it to. Having a normal reproductive cycle is healthy domestic-mare physiology. The aim isn't to switch her hormones off or flatten her personality.
MellowMare supports the wider picture around that natural cycle – hormonal rhythm, nervous-system response and physical comfort – so those normal hormonal changes don't have to dominate how she feels or behaves.
We still want your mare at the end of it - the one who's more comfortable being herself.
What's the difference between MellowMare and StressTonic?
This is where that pattern becomes really useful.
If she's lovely for much of the month but noticeably changes around her seasons – more sensitive, reactive, distracted or physically uncomfortable – MellowMare is where we'd usually start.
If she's permanently on edge, tense, shut down or struggling to settle regardless of where she is in her cycle, we'd be thinking more about the wider stress response, and StressTonic may make more sense.
Hormones have a rhythm, whereas chronic stress usually doesn't always check the calendar. Contact us and we'll talk through it.
Can MellowMare help if my mare seems physically uncomfortable during her seasons?
That's an important part of the picture.
What looks like “bad behaviour” isn't always behavioural at all. Changing reproductive hormones sit alongside uterine activity, muscular tension and nervous-system signalling – so a mare who suddenly objects to everything, tail-swishy becomes sensitive through her body may simply be responding to how she feels physically.
That's why MellowMare doesn't focus on hormones alone - it also includes herbs traditionally used to support muscular and uterine comfort alongside nervous-system softening.
If physical discomfort is particularly pronounced, DuoBute or short-term TriBute may also be useful alongside it.
How long should I feed MellowMare for?
Give it enough time to see your mare through her natural cycle rather than judging from a handful of days.
We'd usually want to watch her over at least one or two complete cycles, because that's when you can begin comparing like with like: How was she at this point last month, and how is she now?
Some mares remain on MellowMare longer term because their cycle-linked pattern returns predictably through the breeding season.
And that's really the measure we're interested in – not whether she suddenly becomes a different horse, but whether those previously difficult days become less difficult.
