Has your horse started coughing – dry and tickly, or bringing mucus up?

Perhaps it's an occasional dry cough, something triggered by dust or hay, or a wetter cough where you're seeing mucus being shifted too.

That's where we'd look at KoffTonic - our organic herbal tincture designed to support comfortable coughing and natural airway clearance, while soothing the sensitive tissues lining the throat and upper airways.

“A noticeable difference by the next morning!” – Catherine W.

R ather than simply trying to quieten the cough, KoffTonic combines traditional expectorant and demulcent herbs to support comfortable mucus clearance and airway ease – whether the respiratory system is responding to environmental irritants, seasonal changes, or recovering after a respiratory upset.

Overview – when a cough is trying to do a job

A cough is a mechanism - not automatically the enemy. It might sound alarming, but the reflex itself actually has a useful job to do.

Your horse's respiratory tract is lined with a protective layer of mucus that helps trap dust, pollen and other unwanted particles before they travel further into the lungs. That mucus then needs to be moved and cleared.

And that's exactly what the cough is trying to do - so we don't want to suppress it!

You may hear a dry, irritating cough with very little coming up. Or you may see the opposite – a much wetter, productive cough where mucus is very obviously being shifted.

Either way, the aim isn't simply to switch the cough off.

Where KoffTonic comes in

KoffTonic combines traditional expectorant herbs, chosen to support mucus movement and clearance, with soothing demulcent herbs for the sensitive tissues lining the throat and airways.

That makes it useful across a broader cough picture – whether the respiratory system is responding to dust and environmental irritants, seasonal changes, or still clearing mucus following a respiratory upset.

Of course, we still want to know why your horse is coughing. A worsening cough, fever, breathing effort, or suspected infection needs veterinary attention.

But where the cough reflex is doing the job it was designed to do, KoffTonic is about helping that process feel clearer, easier and more comfortable - because sometimes the cough isn't the problem – it's a horse trying to clear one.

How KoffTonic fits into your horse's support plan

KoffTonic is a good fit when your horse is coughing and the respiratory system needs some help to clear, soothe and settle things down.

Choose KoffTonic if your horse:

✔ Has developed an occasional dry, tickly or irritating cough

✔ Has a wetter cough where mucus is clearly being shifted

✔ Coughs in response to dusty hay, bedding, dry arenas or other environmental irritants

✔ Seems to have a sensitive throat or upper airway during seasonal changes

✔ Is recovering well from a respiratory upset but still has some residual mucus to clear

✔ Needs short-term support for comfortable, productive airway clearance

In short: if your horse is coughing but otherwise seems well, and the cough appears to be doing the useful job of clearing or responding to irritation, KoffTonic is where we'd start.

Supporting the wider picture

Dusty forage, dry bedding, poor ventilation and airborne arena particles can keep irritating the airways no matter what we put in the feed bowl. So environmental management belongs right alongside respiratory support.

  • PollenTonic – where coughing appears alongside a clearly seasonal allergy-type picture, often with nose rubbing, watery or irritated eyes, nasal sensitivity or other pollen-linked signs.
  • BreathePlus – where your horse is showing more persistent or deeper airway involvement, such as wheezing, heave lines, and increased breathing effort.

Foundation support

Healthy airways need good everyday management underneath them.

Supporting your horse's baseline nutrition with a forage-balanced mineral solution such as our EquiVita or VitaComplete also helps provide the nutritional foundations that healthy tissues, immune function and recovery rely upon.

In summary

Use KoffTonic when the cough itself needs help doing its job – loosening and shifting mucus while soothing the tissues that become irritated along the way.

Energetics - how KoffTonic works

If you want the science, 'energetic architecture' explains how a blend is designed to work across the body's interconnected systems – not just which herbs are included, but how they interact to create a specific effect.

KoffTonic is built around a simple respiratory principle: if a cough is trying to clear something, it might need some help rather than suppressing it.

That means supporting mucus movement and clearance while also soothing the sensitive tissues that become irritated along the way.

How the formula works

  1. Helping mucus move - Elecampane, Mullein, Aniseed and Fennel bring the expectorant side of the formula, traditionally used to support the movement and clearance of respiratory mucus. The aim isn't an increasingly forceful cough – supporting an already useful clearance mechanism.
  2. Soothing the tissues doing the work - Repeated coughing, dry air and environmental irritants can leave the throat and upper-airway lining feeling decidedly fed up. Marshmallow, Liquorice, Coltsfoot and Plantain bring soothing, mucilage-rich and traditionally demulcent support, helping maintain comfortable, well-hydrated mucous membranes while clearance continues.
  3. Keeping clearance comfortable - T his is where the two sides of KoffTonic matter together. Expectorant herbs support movement; soothing herbs help prevent that movement becoming an increasingly irritating cycle of cough → irritation → more coughing.

Big picture

KoffTonic is designed to support the clearance process underneath the cough – helping mucus move while keeping the tissues involved as comfortable as possible.

Shift what needs shifting, soothe what needs soothing, and let a useful cough get on with its day job.
