KOLICTONIC for Horses | Organic Gut-Calming & Post-Colic Digestive Recovery Support
Nutritional support during veterinary assessment for mild digestive spasms, and throughout the days and weeks following a colic episode as normal gut function becomes re-established.
"All I can say is thank god we had this on the shelf with DuoBute. This tincture gave me precious extra time with our beautiful old boy. Knowing he was more comfortable in those final moments meant everything to us." Carolina T.
When people search for support after colic, they're usually looking for one thing. Not a miracle - just the confidence that their horse's gut can settle down again.
A colic episode doesn't always end when the pain stops - we know from our own experience with dear old Murf. Even after the immediate crisis has passed, many horses are left with a digestive system that's unsettled, sensitive, and still trying to find its rhythm again. Owners will spend the following days watching every dropping, every mouthful of hay, every glance at the flank, hoping they aren't about to go through it all again.
That's exactly why we created KolicTonic - and Murf was our crash test dummie.
Rather than simply focusing on the colic episode itself, KolicTonic combines calming, soothing, and carminative botanicals that help support comfortable digestion, natural gut motility, and digestive recovery during the days and weeks afterwards - gently encouraging the gut to regain its confidence.
Sometimes the most important part of recovering from colic is helping both the horse and the owner relax again.

Overview
Colic is one of the few words that can make every horse owner's heart sink. I remember back in 2011 when Murf had his last colic episode (other than the one in 2025 which finally took him), I was in such a state that I couldn't remember how to use my mobile phone to call the vet.
Whether a colic episode is caused by spasms, gas, feed changes, stress, dehydration, or simply one of the many ways a digestive system can become unsettled, the immediate priority is always the same - veterinary assessment, followed by helping the horse through the acute episode safely.
But what we tend to see thereafter is that recovery doesn't always finish when the colic does.
Many horses remain digestive "worriers" for a while afterwards. The gut can stay sensitive, digestive rhythm may feel unpredictable, and owners often find themselves watching every dropping, every haynet, and every unusual behaviour, wondering whether another episode is beginning.
Which is hardly surprising - the digestive tract has just experienced significant disruption.
Normal gut motility needs to become re-established, microbial populations will need time to stabilise again, and the horse's nervous system has usually been through a considerable amount of stress as well.
That's why KolicTonic isn't simply about the episode itself.
Its carefully selected botanicals support three things that often need attention during recovery:
• helping settle digestive spasms and gas
• supporting comfortable gut movement as normal motility returns
• calming the gut–nervous system connection, recognising that stress and digestion constantly influence one another
Once the immediate recovery period has passed, some horses benefit from taking the next step - supporting longer-term hindgut stability with SiboCARE, GutBitters, BiomeTonic, or WildFed, depending on why the colic developed in the first place.
Preventing the next episode often starts with understanding what unsettled the gut in the first place.
How KolicTonic fits into your horse's support plan
KolicTonic is a good fit when the immediate crisis has passed, but your horse's digestive system still feels like it's finding its feet again.
✔ Your horse is recovering from a recent colic episode
✔ Their appetite, droppings, or digestive rhythm still feel a little unsettled
✔ You're watching every mouthful of hay and every pile of droppings, hoping everything is returning to normal
✔ Your horse has a history of mild spasmodic or gas-related colic
✔ Stress, feed changes, or digestive sensitivity seem to trigger gut discomfort
✔ You'd like something on the shelf to support your horse while veterinary help is on the way during mild digestive spasms
In short: if your horse's digestive system needs a little help finding its confidence again after colic, KolicTonic is designed to support that recovery.
For many owners, KolicTonic becomes the first stage after the immediate veterinary emergency has passed. Once the gut begins moving comfortably again, attention can then turn to understanding why the episode happened in the first place and supporting longer-term digestive stability.
From there, support can be adapted depending on what you're seeing.
- Supporting long-term gut recovery
- SiboCARE – where gas, bloating, or hindgut imbalance suggest the microbial ecosystem still needs stabilising.
- GutAminos – where nutritional support for the intestinal lining becomes the next priority following digestive disruption.
- GutBitters – where seasonal grass changes or dietary transitions appear to be contributing to recurring digestive instability.
- BiomeTonic – for ongoing support of hindgut microbial balance once stability has returned.
- WildFed – to restore the plant diversity that helps nourish a resilient, healthy hindgut microbiome over the longer term.
- Foundation support
Digestive recovery doesn't happen in isolation. Good-quality forage, constant access to fresh water, and a forage-based mineral blend such as VitaComplete or EquiVita all help create the nutritional foundations the recovering gut depends upon.

In summary
Use KolicTonic to help your horse through the days and weeks following a colic episode, then build longer-term digestive resilience by supporting the underlying patterns that may have unsettled the gut in the first place.

Composition glossary
Each herb in KolicTonic works in synergy to calm digestive spasms, soothe tension, and help restore the gut’s natural motility.
- Althaea officinalis Radix – Rich in soothing mucilage that coats and comforts the gastrointestinal lining, helping maintain a calm, stable gut environment after spasm or irritation.
- Matricaria chamomilla – Traditionally valued for its antispasmodic and calming properties. Supports smooth muscle relaxation, helping to ease gut tension while promoting emotional relaxation.
- Foeniculum vulgare – Gentle carminative herb that supports natural gas dispersion and digestive rhythm. Encourages steady peristalsis to reduce discomfort linked with trapped gas.
- Melissa officinalis – A dual-action botanical that soothes both the gut and the nervous system. Helps regulate digestive tone while easing stress-related tightness.
- Mentha piperita – Cooling and aromatic, supports normal intestinal motility and comfort. Its volatile oils help calm the digestive tract during post-colic recovery.
- Scutellaria laterifolia – Gentle nervine that supports relaxation of the enteric nervous system, complementing the gut-soothing botanicals to maintain calm and ease.
- Valeriana officinalis – Renowned antispasmodic, naturally supporting relaxation and helping settle the stress response, aiding physical and emotional calm following digestive upset.
- Verbena officinalis – Restorative herb with mild antispasmodic and nervine properties, supporting smooth muscle relaxation and steady digestive rhythm.

Energetic architecture - the synergy behind the blend
Energetic Architecture explains how the herbs in a formula are structured to work together in a balanced and purposeful way.
KolicTonic was created around a simple observation: once a colic episode has passed, the gut often needs time to regain its confidence.
- The acute phase - pain/spasm/emergency response - has passed.
- The recovery phase - residual tension, poor motility, sensitive lining, nervous anticipation - now needs managing for normal digestive rhythm to return.
In short: normal digestive rhythm has been disrupted, the digestive lining will likely still feel sensitive, and both the gut and the nervous system are often slower to settle than we'd like.
Rather than focusing on one aspect of recovery, KolicTonic brings together three complementary areas of support that help the digestive system find its way back towards normal function.
Think of it as helping the gut exhale after everything it's just been through.
Functional intent
KolicTonic is designed to support:
- comfortable digestive motility during recovery
- healthy movement of gas through the digestive tract
- soothing support for the intestinal lining
- the gut–nervous system connection
- steady digestive recovery following disruption
The goal is to help support the gut as normal digestive function becomes re-established afterwards.
Functional categories – recovery support in action
- Spasmolytic & carminative support - Foeniculum vulgare, Mentha piperita, Matricaria chamomilla
- Supporting comfortable digestive movement while helping ease gas, spasms, and digestive tension as normal gut rhythm returns. - Mucosal protection - Althaea officinalis
- Providing soothing mucilage to help support and comfort the digestive lining following irritation or disruption. - Neuro-gastro calming - Melissa officinalis, Scutellaria lateriflora, Valeriana officinalis, Verbena officinalis
- Supporting the close relationship between the nervous system and digestive function, helping both settle together during recovery.
Big picture
What we know from witnessing dear old Murf over the years is that recovering from colic isn't simply about getting through the episode - it's about helping the gut regain the confidence to function normally again afterwards.
That's where KolicTonic fits. Its role isn't to take the place of emergency veterinary care - it's to help support the digestive system through the days and weeks that follow, when normal rhythm, comfort, and confidence are gradually returning.
Put simply, a calm gut recovers more comfortably.
Clinical considerations
