KOLICTONIC for Horses | Post-Colic Digestive Recovery & Gut Support
Nutritional support during veterinary assessment for mild digestive spasms, and throughout the days and weeks following a colic episode as normal gut function becomes re-established.
"All I can say is thank god we had this on the shelf with DuoBute. This tincture gave me precious extra time with our beautiful old boy. Knowing he was more comfortable in those final moments meant everything to us." Carolina T.
When people search for support after colic, they're usually looking for one thing. Not a miracle - just the confidence that their horse's gut can settle down again.
A colic episode doesn't always end when the pain stops - we know from our own experience with dear old Murf. Even after the immediate crisis has passed, many horses are left with a digestive system that's unsettled, sensitive, and still trying to find its rhythm again. Owners will spend the following days watching every dropping, every mouthful of hay, every glance at the flank, hoping they aren't about to go through it all again.
That's exactly why we created KolicTonic - and Murf was our crash test dummy.
Rather than simply focusing on the colic episode itself, KolicTonic combines calming, soothing, and carminative botanicals that help support comfortable digestion, natural gut motility, and digestive recovery during the days and weeks afterwards - gently encouraging the gut to regain its confidence.
Sometimes the most important part of recovering from colic is helping both the horse and the owner relax again.

Overview - why recovery after colic matters
Colic is one of the few words that can make every horse owner's heart sink. I still remember Murf's episode back in 2011. I was in such a panic I couldn't even remember how to use my mobile phone to call the vet.
The immediate priority is always veterinary assessment, but what we tend to see thereafter is that recovery doesn't always finish when the colic does.
Many horses remain digestive "worriers" for a while afterwards. The gut can stay sensitive, digestive rhythm may feel unpredictable, and owners often find themselves watching every dropping, every haynet, and every unusual behaviour, wondering whether another episode is beginning.
Which is hardly surprising - the digestive tract has just been through a significant disruption.
Normal gut motility needs to become re-established, microbial populations will need time to stabilise again, and the horse's nervous system has usually been through a considerable amount of stress as well.
That's why KolicTonic isn't simply about the episode itself.
Its carefully selected botanicals support three things that often need attention during recovery:
• helping settle digestive spasms and gas
• supporting comfortable gut movement as normal motility returns
• calming the gut–nervous system connection, recognising that stress and digestion constantly influence one another
Once the immediate recovery period has passed, some horses benefit from taking the next step - supporting longer-term hindgut stability with SiboCARE, GutBitters, BiomeTonic, or WildFed, depending on why the colic developed in the first place.
Preventing the next episode often starts with understanding what unsettled the gut in the first place.
How KolicTonic fits into your horse's support plan
KolicTonic is a good fit when the immediate crisis has passed, but your horse's digestive system still feels like it's finding its rhythm again.
✔ Your horse is recovering from a recent colic episode
✔ Their appetite, droppings, or digestive rhythm still feel a little unsettled
✔ You're watching every mouthful of hay and every pile of droppings, hoping everything is returning to normal
✔ Your horse has a history of mild spasmodic or gas-related colic
✔ Stress, feed changes, or digestive sensitivity seem to trigger gut discomfort
✔ You'd like something on the shelf to support your horse while veterinary help is on the way during mild digestive spasms
In short: if your horse's digestive system needs a little help finding its confidence again after colic, KolicTonic is designed to support that recovery.
For many owners, KolicTonic becomes the first stage after the immediate veterinary emergency has passed. Once the gut begins moving comfortably again, attention can then turn to understanding why the episode happened in the first place and supporting longer-term digestive stability.
From there, support can be adapted depending on what you're seeing.
- Supporting long-term gut recovery
- SiboCARE – where gas, bloating, or hindgut imbalance suggest the microbial ecosystem still needs stabilising.
- GutAminos – where nutritional support for the intestinal lining becomes the next priority following digestive disruption.
- GutBitters – where seasonal grass changes or dietary transitions appear to be contributing to recurring digestive instability.
- BiomeTonic – for ongoing support of hindgut microbial balance once stability has returned.
- WildFed – to restore the plant diversity that helps nourish a resilient, healthy hindgut microbiome over the longer term.
- Foundation support
Digestive recovery doesn't happen in isolation. Good-quality forage, constant access to fresh water, and a forage-based mineral blend such as VitaComplete or EquiVita all help create the nutritional foundations the recovering gut depends upon.

In summary
Use KolicTonic to help your horse through the days and weeks following a colic episode, then build longer-term digestive resilience by supporting the underlying patterns that may have unsettled the gut in the first place.
Composition & feed guide
KolicTonic is a nutritional, functional food supplement and not veterinary medicine. For more on this, see Dr Kellon's article - Nutrition is not 'Alternative' Therapy

Energetic architecture - the synergy behind the blend
Energetic Architecture explains how the herbs in a formula are structured to work together in a balanced and purposeful way.
KolicTonic was created around a simple observation: once a colic episode has passed, the gut often needs time to regain its confidence.
Rather than focusing on one aspect of recovery, KolicTonic brings together three complementary areas of support that help the digestive system find its way back towards normal function.
Think of it as helping the gut exhale after everything it's just been through.
Functional intent
KolicTonic is designed to support:
- comfortable digestive motility during recovery
- healthy movement of gas through the digestive tract
- soothing support for the intestinal lining
- the gut–nervous system connection
- steady digestive recovery following disruption
The goal is to help support the gut as normal digestive function becomes re-established afterwards.
Functional categories – recovery support in action
- Spasmolytic & carminative support - Foeniculum vulgare, Mentha piperita, Matricaria chamomilla
- Supporting comfortable digestive movement while helping ease gas, spasms, and digestive tension as normal gut rhythm returns. - Mucosal protection - Althaea officinalis
- Providing soothing mucilage to help support and comfort the digestive lining following irritation or disruption. - Neuro-gastro calming - Melissa officinalis, Scutellaria lateriflora, Valeriana officinalis, Verbena officinalis
- Supporting the close relationship between the nervous system and digestive function, helping both settle together during recovery.
Big picture
What we know from witnessing dear old Murf over the years is that recovering from colic isn't simply about getting through the episode - it's about helping the gut regain the confidence to function normally again afterwards.
That's where KolicTonic fits. Its role isn't to take the place of emergency veterinary care - it's to help support the digestive system through the days and weeks that follow, when normal rhythm, comfort, and confidence are gradually returning.
Put simply, a calm gut recovers more comfortably.

FAQs about colic recovery in horses
What is KolicTonic designed to support?
KolicTonic is designed to support horses during the days and weeks following a colic episode, when the immediate veterinary emergency has passed but the digestive system is still settling back into its normal rhythm.
It combines carefully selected botanicals to support comfortable gut motility, digestive calm, and post-colic recovery while the gut regains its confidence.
Is KolicTonic a replacement for calling the vet?
Absolutely not.
Colic is always a veterinary emergency.
KolicTonic is a nutritional support product designed to complement veterinary care - never replace it.
Its role begins once veterinary assessment has taken place, or while veterinary help is on the way during mild digestive spasms if appropriate.
When should I start feeding KolicTonic?
Many owners introduce KolicTonic once the initial crisis has been assessed and their vet is happy for the horse to begin eating again.
It can then be continued throughout the early recovery period while normal digestive rhythm gradually returns.
My horse seems brighter, but I'm still worried. Is that normal?
Very. Many owners tell us that the days after a colic episode can be almost as stressful as the episode itself.
You're watching every haynet, every pile of droppings, every glance at the flank - completely understandable.
KolicTonic was created for exactly this period - when both the horse and the owner are waiting for the gut to settle and confidence to return.
How long should I feed KolicTonic?
We recommend feeding a 1-month course to help your horse's digestive rhythm return.
If the gut stays sensitive, longer-term support may be appropriate using products such as SiboCARE, GutAminos, BiomeTonic, or WildFed, depending on the underlying cause.
My horse has a history of spasmodic or gas colic. Can KolicTonic help?
This was dear old Murf, and today, many owners keep KolicTonic on the shelf for horses with a history of mild spasmodic or gas-related digestive episodes.
It provides nutritional support for digestive comfort and gut motility whilst veterinary advice is being sought.
What's the difference between KolicTonic and SiboCARE?
Although both support the digestive system, they have different jobs.
KolicTonic focuses on helping the gut recover following a colic episode by supporting digestive comfort, normal motility, and the gut–nervous system connection.
SiboCARE focuses on restoring microbial balance where hindgut dysbiosis, gas, bloating, or digestive instability remain ongoing concerns.
Think of KolicTonic as helping the gut recover.
Think of SiboCARE as helping rebuild long-term hindgut stability.
Why does the gut often stay unsettled after colic?
Although the pain may have passed, the digestive system has often been through a significant disruption.
Normal gut motility takes time to re-establish, the hindgut microbiome may need to stabilise again, and the nervous system often remains on high alert.
Supporting recovery during this period can help the digestive system find its rhythm again.
Why are calming herbs included?
One of the fascinating things about the digestive system is how closely it's connected to the nervous system.
Stress influences digestion.
Digestion influences stress.
KolicTonic includes herbs traditionally used to support both, recognising that helping the gut relax often means helping the horse relax too.
What should I feed after the recovery period?
Once your horse has regained normal digestive rhythm, it's worth asking another question:
"What caused the colic in the first place?"
Depending on the answer, many owners move on to products such as:
- SiboCARE for hindgut stability
- GutAminos for intestinal lining support
- GutBitters during seasonal transitions, i.e. grass flushes
- BiomeTonic for ongoing microbial balance
- WildFed for long-term botanical diversity
The goal isn't simply recovering from this episode - it's reducing the chances of the next one.
Can KolicTonic be fed alongside other EquiNatural products?
Yes. It is commonly used alongside DuoBute during the early recovery period and can be followed by other gut-support products as your horse progresses through recovery.
How quickly will I notice a difference?
Every horse recovers differently. Some settle within a few days, whilst others take longer to regain normal digestive rhythm and confidence.
KolicTonic is designed to support that natural recovery process rather than provide an instant fix.
Do I still need a mineral balancer if I'm feeding KolicTonic?
Yes. Digestive recovery depends on good nutritional foundations.
Providing quality forage alongside a forage-based mineral balancer such as VitaComplete or EquiVita helps support the recovering digestive system and longer-term gut resilience.
