Top Tip
For horses with more significant spring allergy symptoms, i.e. requiring more targeted cough/allergy support, consider our comprehensive PollenCOMBO . This 3-in-1 formula combines PollenTonic , KoffTonic (cough reflex and airway comfort), and Spirulina (known to support allergic reactions, and balance histamine levels).
Together, these supplements provide a complete equine seasonal allergy supplement.
Overview
Allergic reactions in horses are now so common throughout the year, with spring (tree) pollens often causing significant histamine intolerance. Then along come our hot and humid summers, presenting a deeper respiratory congestion for some horses from the grass pollens.
PollenTonic addresses the spring tree-pollen symptoms by calming the immune system's over-reaction to allergens.
The root cause? An over-reaction by the body's immune system, with recent science now identifying this syndrome as a much bigger picture - KPU
- a multi-metabolic detoxification/immune dysregulation disorder which presents as a respiratory issue.
For further equine pollen allergy insights, see our main A-Z Respiration page in the Advice Centre above.
Is PollenTonic Right for My Horse?
PollenTonic is ideal for horses who struggle with the lighter to moderate end of spring allergy symptoms - especially those whose reactions are mainly histamine-driven rather than deeper respiratory congestion (see our BreathePlus ).
Functional Fit – where PollenTonic belongs in seasonal allergy support
PollenTonic is designed for spring pollen–related allergy support, particularly where reactions are histamine-driven and upper-airway focused.
It helps support balanced immune responses during early pollen exposure, encouraging calmer reactions in the eyes, nose, and upper airways when tree pollens and rising pollen counts trigger seasonal sensitivity.
PollenTonic is the right choice when your horse’s symptoms are noticeable but mild to moderate, and driven more by irritation and reactivity than by congestion or breathing effort.
→ PollenTonic is:
- for early spring tree-pollen sensitivity
- for histamine-type reactions (itchy eyes, nose rubbing)
- for upper-airway and sinus irritation without deeper chest involvement
- for immune calming during pollen exposure
- for horses whose symptoms fluctuate with wind, weather, and pollen count
→ PollenTonic is not:
- a deep airway or lung-support formula
- a solution for chronic wheezing, coughing, or breathing effort
- designed for summer grass-pollen congestion
Which blend — PollenTonic, PollenCOMBO, or BreathePlus?
Each blend supports a different level of respiratory and allergy involvement:
→ PollenTonic
Spring comfort | Histamine moderation | Upper-airway support
Best when symptoms are light to moderate and mainly immune-driven — itchy eyes, nose rubbing, mild headshaking during spring pollen season.
→ PollenCOMBO
Allergy + airway support | Seasonal escalation
Best when spring pollen reactions begin to involve the chest or throat - coughing, airway irritation, or recurring flare-ups as the season progresses.
→ BreathePlus
Chronic respiratory support | Lung & airway resilience
Best when breathing discomfort becomes ongoing or worsens with humidity, dust, or stable environments — including wheezing, flared nostrils, or heave lines.
Quick guide - when to choose which?
| IF YOUR HORSE… | BEST CHOICE |
|---|---|
| Has itchy eyes, nose rubbing, or mild headshaking in spring | PollenTonic |
| Reacts mainly to early tree pollens | PollenTonic |
| Develops cough or airway irritation as pollen increases | PollenCOMBO |
| Has stronger or recurring spring-to-summer flare-ups | PollenCOMBO |
| Shows wheezing, breathing effort, or chest involvement | BreathePlus |
| Worsens in humidity, dust, or stable environments | BreathePlus |
In short
If your horse’s spring allergies are more itchy and reactive than congested, PollenTonic offers gentle, targeted seasonal support.
If symptoms deepen or shift toward breathing discomfort, step up to PollenCOMBO - or BreathePlus where respiratory involvement becomes chronic.

Fussy Eater?
Horses sometimes have their own opinions (and strong tastebuds!), so now and then a new blend might need a little extra encouragement. This doesn’t reflect the quality or efficacy of the product, but rather their natural instinct towards new flavours.

Clinical Considerations
PollenTonic is a gentle, supportive blend designed to help maintain seasonal spring-pollen comfort, balanced immune responses, and clearer breathing.
Advisories
- For best results, begin feeding 4–6 weeks before the spring-pollen season, so the immune system can strengthen before allergens peak.
- Contains botanicals that naturally influence fluid balance, histamine responses, and respiratory comfort - ensure constant access to water and forage.
- Horses with deeper spring-pollen airway congestion and recurring cough, may require PollenCOMBO or BreathePlus instead. Please check with us for advice.
- May be used long-term through spring as part of a broad seasonal support routine.
Cautions
- Glycyrrhiza (Liquorice) may prolong corticosteroid action; veterinary oversight recommended for horses on steroid therapy.
- Herbs influencing circulation (e.g. Ginkgo , Achillea ) should be used with care alongside anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications.
- No clinically significant interactions are reported at nutritional levels, but always space herbal and medicated feeds by a few hours where possible.
Contraindications
- Not suitable for pregnant or nursing mares due to aromatic and immune-modulating botanicals.
- Avoid use in horses on steroid medications(dexamethasone, prednisolone, inhalers) unless under veterinary guidance - Glycyrrhiza (Liquorice) may prolong steroid activity.
- Use caution in horses with kidney disease or fluid retention, as Glycyrrhiza (Liquorice) may influence electrolyte balance and water regulation.
- Not advised for severe or atypical headshaking cases where symptoms occur outside pollen-related triggers (possible trigeminal involvement).
