If your horse seems to have a bit of everything going on - gut issues, skin flare-ups, poor hoof quality, seasonal sensitivities, and nothing ever quite settles - this is usually where we start thinking in terms of KPU patterns.

" My horse is transformed - faecal water gone, energy up, and coat shining. ” Emma

Rather than chasing one issue at a time, KPUCOMBO brings key elements together into one coordinated approach, supporting the hindgut, nutrient pathways, and the wider gut–liver connection that so often sits underneath recurring patterns.

KPUCOMBO was created to simplify a complex picture - a stabilising, 5-in-1 blend combining EquiNatural's SiboCARE , GutAminos , P5P , B12-Balance & organic Spirulina into one formula designed around the key pathways commonly associated with the KPU spectrum.

It’s designed as a starting point when multiple patterns keep circling back - helping the system settle, stabilise, and begin to find a more consistent rhythm again.

If things are more complex or long-standing, this is often the first step before moving into the full KPU Reset Programme for a deeper, structured approach.

Overview - understanding KPU in horses

What is KPU?

Some horses seem to collect problems - gut issues, skin issues, poor hoof quality, seasonal reactions... Things can improve for a while, then something else pops up.

Individually, none of the pieces seem connected. Yet somehow they always seem to appear on repeat.

Meet KPU.

Cryptopyrroluria (KPU) is a complex metabolic pattern increasingly recognised in equine functional medicine. Often called " the disease with a thousand faces ", it rarely presents as one clear issue, instead showing up as a collection of seemingly unrelated issues that never quite resolve.

Horses on the KPU spectrum often show recurring, interconnected patterns involving the gut, skin, hooves, energy, immune system, and overall resilience.

At its root, KPU stems from a disrupted hindgut microbiome (very often starting from birth based on how the foal was raised), and impaired nutrient production of Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P5P), the activated form of vitamin B6.

Over time, this can place additional strain on the liver's natural housekeeping processes, making it harder for the body to maintain internal balance.

How KPUCOMBO helps

KPUCOMBO brings key elements together into one structured blend - targeting hindgut stability, the gut-liver pathway, nutrient activation, and re-establishing the internal "detoxification" housekeeping processes.

How KPUCOMBO fits into your horse's support plan

*If it's one clear issue, stay targeted. If it's multiple patterns that keep circling back, this is where we step in.

KPUCOMBO is a good fit when your horse has multiple, ongoing issues that never seem to fully resolve.

✔ Multiple recurring patterns – gut, skin, hooves, respiration, i.e. pollen allergies, sweet itch, mallenders, ongoing cough, repeated abscessing... rather than just one isolated issue

✔ Droppings - loose, inconsistent, or faecal water that keeps returning

✔ Coat quality - dull, patchy, or slow to improve, despite good feeding

✔ Hooves - weak, or poor quality

✔ Your horse seems overly sensitive to environmental seasonal changes such as pollens, midges

✔ A history of repeated interventions, with no lasting resolution

✔ You feel like you've tried everything but nothing works

In short: if your horse seems to have a bit of everything going on, KPUCOMBO is often where we start.

For many horses, KPUCOMBO becomes the stabilisation phase to help the system settle, and from there, support can be adapted depending on what you're seeing.

- Supporting the transition afterwards

  • LKLCARE – often introduced afterwards to support the liver–kidney–lymph axis.

- Alleviating and stabilising

  • DuoBute – where additional gut comfort is helpful during the early stages.
  • StressTonic – where tension, sensitivity, or adrenal load are part of the picture.

- When the picture is more complex

Some horses have longer-standing patterns that need a more structured approach.

  • KPU Reset Programme – for horses requiring a deeper, step-by-step programme supporting the gut, nutrient pathways, liver processing, and wider metabolic resilience.

- Foundation support

KPU horses rarely thrive on targeted supplements alone. Supporting your horse's baseline nutrition with a forage-based mineral foundation such as VitaComplete or EquiVita helps create the foundations that allow deeper support programmes to work more effectively.

*If you're not already feeding a mineral balancer, try one of our 1kg trial bags.

In summary

Use KPUCOMBO when multiple patterns keep circling back – allow the system time to stabilise, and step into the structured reset programme if deeper support is needed.

The synergy behind KPUCOMBO

Energetic architecture explains how the components within KPUCOMBO are structured to support whole-system recalibration across the gut–liver–immune axis.

KPU patterns rarely exist in isolation. The hindgut, nutrient pathways, liver processing, and immune resilience all influence each other – and when communication between those systems breaks down, recurring multi-system patterns can emerge.

KPUCOMBO is designed to support five interconnected pathways:

→ Hindgut stability
→ Gut lining integrity
→ Nutrient activation
→ Liver processing
→ Immune & metabolic resilience

Functional categories – KPU support in action

  1. Hindgut stabilisation & microbial balance - Andrographis paniculata, Berberis vulgaris, Handroanthus impetiginosus, Astragalus membranaceus, Filipendula ulmaria, Plantago ovata, Smilax ornata
    - Re-establishing a stable gut environment where beneficial microbes can function effectively and metabolic disruption is reduced.
  2. Gut lining repair & nutrient absorption - L-Glutamine, Althaea officinalis radix, Symphytum officinale
    - Supporting the integrity of the intestinal wall to allow proper absorption of nutrients essential for metabolic function.
  3. Nutrient activation & biochemical support - Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P5P), Vitamin B12 (B12-Balance), N-Acetyl L-Cysteine
    - Restoring key nutrient pathways often compromised in KPU, particularly those involved in detoxification and enzyme function.
  4. Liver processing & internal housekeeping - Taraxacum officinale folia, Crataegus oxyacanthoides, Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina)
    - Supporting the liver’s ability to process metabolic by-products and maintain internal balance.
  5. Immune modulation & systemic resilience - Astragalus membranaceus, Hericium erinaceus, Lentinula edodes
    - Helping stabilise immune responses and support overall metabolic resilience as the system recalibrates.

This layered approach allows the system to stabilise gradually and regain steadier internal balance over time.

Clinical considerations

Advisories

  • For horses previously showing signs of discomfort or stress, support alongside DuoBute(for gut comfort) or StressTonic(for adrenal-calming support). *See "Your support plan - is KPUCOMBO right for your horse?" tab above.
  • Once the KPUCOMBO course has finished and you're happy that the gut has stabilised, follow with a 1-month course of LKLCARE for 4–6 weeks to help support the liver–kidney–lymph axis and maintain internal balance.
  • Ensure 24/7 access to quality meadow hay and natural movement to maintain hindgut motility and microbial balance.
  • Contributes as part of the full KPU Reset Programme for horses requiring deeper metabolic recovery.

Contraindications

  • Not suitable for pregnant or lactating mares(contains hormonally active botanicals).
  • Use caution in horses receiving steroid, immune-suppressant, or anticoagulant medications; veterinary guidance is recommended.
  • Not recommended during autoimmune flare-ups or late-stage Lyme, where immune stimulation may be undesirable. Always stabilise first.

FAQs about KPU

What is KPUCOMBO designed to support?

KPUCOMBO is designed for horses showing multiple recurring patterns that never seem to fully resolve.

Rather than targeting one isolated issue, it brings together support for hindgut stability, gut lining integrity, nutrient activation, liver processing, and wider metabolic support.

It is often chosen when gut, skin, hoof, respiratory, behavioural, or immune-related patterns seem to be occurring together.

What exactly is KPU?

KPU (Cryptopyrroluria) is a metabolic pattern increasingly recognised in equine functional medicine.

Rather than presenting as one clear condition, it often appears as a collection of seemingly unrelated issues involving the gut, skin, hooves, energy, immune system, and overall resilience.

This is why KPU is often referred to as " the disease with a thousand faces."

How do I know if my horse might be a KPU horse?

Many owners start exploring KPU when they feel like they're constantly chasing symptoms.

Common patterns include:

✔ Gut issues that keep returning

✔ Sweet itch, pollen sensitivity, or recurring skin flare-ups

✔ Hoof quality concerns or repeated abscesses

✔ Faecal water or inconsistent droppings

✔ Ongoing respiratory sensitivities

✔ Behavioural sensitivity or stress reactivity

✔ Multiple issues that seem unrelated but never fully resolve

If you find yourself persistently chasing recurring symptoms, KPUCOMBO is a good place to start.

What's included in KPUCOMBO?

KPUCOMBO combines five key elements into one structured blend:

• SiboCARE

• GutAminos

• P5P (activated vitamin B6)

• B12-Balance

• Organic Spirulina

Together, these provide support for the hindgut, gut lining, nutrient pathways, liver processing, and wider metabolic resilience.

How is KPUCOMBO different from the KPU Reset Programme?

KPUCOMBO is used as the stabilisation phase. For many horses, it provides an excellent starting point and may be all that is needed.

The KPU Reset Programme is a more structured, step-by-step approach designed for horses with longer-standing, more complex patterns that require a deeper whole-system reset.

Think of KPUCOMBO as the place to start. The KPU Reset Programme is where we go when more support is needed.

How long should I feed KPUCOMBO?

KPUCOMBO is recommended as a minimum 1-month course.

Can KPUCOMBO be fed long term?

KPUCOMBO is primarily designed as a stabilisation and support programme.

Once the course is complete, many owners transition to LKLCARE, foundation nutrition, or a more targetted reset programme depending on their horse's ongoing needs.

Why is P5P included?

P5P (Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate) is the activated form of vitamin B6.

Within the KPU syndrome, compromised P5P status is one of the key metabolic features associated with the wider KPU pattern.

Including activated P5P helps support the gut:liver pathway that is known to be under increased demand in KPU-spectrum horses.

Why is Spirulina included?

Spirulina provides a rich source of nutrients and is widely used to support hindgut deacidifying and mycotoxin binding.

Should I feed DuoBute alongside KPUCOMBO?

Many owners do where discomfort or gut-related tension are part of the picture. DuoBute can provide additional support during the early stages while the system is stabilising.

My horse is stressed and reactive. Can I feed KPUCOMBO alongside StressTonic?

Yes - in fact, we recommend it.

Stress and digestive health are closely connected, particularly in horses showing KPU-type patterns.

StressTonic is commonly used alongside KPUCOMBO where tension, sensitivity, adrenal load, or stress-related challenges are part of the picture.

Why do I feel like I'm constantly chasing symptoms?

This is one of the most common reasons owners begin exploring KPU.

The gut settles, then the skin flares. The skin improves, then the hooves deteriorate. The allergies calm down, then the droppings become inconsistent again.

Rather than viewing these as separate problems, the KPU patterns encourage us to look at the bigger picture to see what underlying patterns may be connecting them together.

Does every horse with sweet itch, EMS, or allergies have KPU?

Great question! And here's a thing – the question shouldn't be "Does this horse have sweet itch?" It's more "Why is this horse's immune system responding this way?"

Within the KPU model, sweet itch is often viewed as one symptom of a wider metabolic and immune imbalance rather than a completely separate issue.

Many horses showing recurring allergic, metabolic, skin, respiratory, or digestive patterns display the wider picture associated with the KPU spectrum.

Sweet itch, pollen sensitivity, skin flare-ups, hoof issues, digestive instability, EMS, and behavioural changes may appear unrelated on the surface, yet share common roots in gut health, nutrient metabolism, liver function, and immune regulation.

When enough of these seemingly unrelated patterns start appearing together, the KPU framework becomes increasingly useful for understanding what might be happening underneath.

Do I still need a mineral balancer if I'm feeding KPUCOMBO?

Yes - this is so important.

KPU horses rarely thrive on targeted supplements alone. A forage-based mineral balancer such as VitaComplete or EquiVita helps provide the nutritional foundations that allow deeper support programmes to work more effectively.
