GUTBITTERS *Organic herbal blend for horses - all-season digestion, bitter balance, biome harmony
Whether grass is flushing, fading, or you’ve switched to hay, GutBitters helps keep digestion smooth and the microbiome balanced.
Herbal bitters are making a comeback, and for good reason. This synergistic blend of organic bitter herbs reawakens digestion, supports the gut–liver axis, and maintains microbial harmony through seasonal and dietary changes - from spring pastures to winter forage.

Overview
Horses evolved to graze diverse, bitter-rich pastures, yet modern managed grazing, hay, and concentrated feeds often lack those wild bitter compounds essential for healthy digestion. Whether your horse is on lush grass, dry hay, or somewhere in between, feeding bitter herbs for horses helps restore natural digestive balance and support overall equine gut health.
GutBitters is a unique blend of organic bitter and aromatic herbs that stimulate digestion, encourage bile flow, and support the gut–liver axis — helping maintain healthy hindgut function, consistent droppings, and a resilient microbiome all year round.
Grass-flush season (and beyond)
We all know this one — the grass flushes, and our horses get loose, cow-pat droppings. It’s especially common when switching from winter hay to rich new grass. Those neon-green shoots can contain up to 60% more water and far less structural fibre, which disrupts fermentation in the hindgut and upsets the microbial balance.
The good news? You can help by feeding herbal bitters to re-activate digestion, support bile flow, and keep the equine hindgut stable through every forage change — spring, autumn, or winter hay season.
While they might seem like just another flavour, bitters trigger a powerful physiological reflex that goes well beyond digestion. They help nutrient absorption, metabolism, and even influence the cardiovascular, immune, and nervous systems — the reason they’re known as nature’s all-round digestive tonic for horses.

Is GutBitters Right for My Horse?
🌿 Ideal for horses who…
- Show loose droppings, bloating, or mild digestive upset during spring or autumn grass flushes.
- Struggle to transition smoothly when pasture or forage changes.
- Are on lush grass, haylage, or richer winter hay and need extra bitter balance to reawaken digestion.
- Have dull coats or sluggish digestion, suggesting a slow gut–liver axis
⚠️ Not suitable for horses who…
- Have active or suspected gastric ulcers (bitters may increase stomach acid during acute flare-ups).
- Are pregnant or nursing mares (due to hormonally active bitters such as Artemisia and Angelica).
- Are currently on omeprazole, antacids, or prescription digestive medications unless advised by a vet (feed several hours apart if used).
- Need more targeted support for more chronic gut issues - see SiboCARE or LeakyGutCOMBO for a restorative approach.
Which blend - GutBitters or WildFed?
Each blend supports the digestive system in a different, complementary way:
→ GutBitters - short-course | cleansing | digestive reset
Your go-to for kick-starting digestion, especially during grass flushes, forage changes, spring/autumn transitions, or after periods of digestive disruption.
Think of GutBitters as a short-course reset that stimulates the ‘bitter reflex,’ encouraging saliva, stomach acid, enzymes, motility, and gut balance.
Best for:
• seasonal changes
• grass flush sensitivity
• unsettled digestion
• loose droppings
• sluggish motility
• spring/autumn rebalancing
→ WildFed - everyday | nourishing | biome-feeding
A gentle, everyday nutritive prebiotic blend that feeds and sustains a healthy gut flora long-term. WildFed supports microbial diversity, hindgut stability, and daily digestive wellbeing — ideal for horses who thrive on a steady, consistent source of natural nourishment.
Best for:
• daily biome nourishment
• long-term gut health
• older horses
• sensitive hindguts
• maintaining healthy droppings
• pairing with any blend for ongoing digestive resilience
Using them together
GutBitters and WildFed make a powerful pair - GutBitters resets, WildFed maintains.
Start with GutBitters when your horse needs a kick-start or seasonal rebalance, then continue with WildFed to feed, stabilise, and sustain the gut flora.
For many horses - especially those prone to spring/autumn upset, grass sensitivity, or biome fragility - using both together offers a beautifully rounded approach to digestive health.

- Matricaria recutita – A soothing digestive nervine that helps calm gastrointestinal tension and ease stress-related digestive upsets, while supporting normal motility.
- Taraxacum officinale Radix – Renowned hepatic and bitter tonic that supports liver function, aiding detoxification and metabolic stability.

Fussy Eater?
Horses sometimes have their own opinions (and strong tastebuds!), so now and then a new blend might need a little extra encouragement. This doesn’t reflect the quality or efficacy of the product, but rather their natural instinct towards new flavours.

Clinical Considerations
Advisories
- Feed during spring and autumn grass flushes, or when droppings become loose from sudden dietary change.
- Introduce gradually, allowing the gut to adapt to the bitter taste - start with a small pinch and build up to the recommended rate.
- Feed for a minimum 2-weeks to stabilise the hindgut.
- Avoid long-term continuous feeding; best used in 4–6 week seasonal courses.
- Feed alongside ad-lib hay to maintain adequate fibre intake and help stabilise the hindgut microbiome.
- Bitters are naturally stimulating - ideally feed earlier in the day to align with digestive rhythms.
- Can be paired with LKLCARE for deeper gut–liver axis support.
Contraindications
- Not suitable for pregnant or nursing mares due to the presence of hormonally active bitters (notably Artemisia absinthium and Angelica archangelica ).
- Avoid use in horses with known gastric irritation or ulceration during acute flare-ups (bitters may increase gastric acid secretion).
